We're going to need some tiny pieces of holystone and a bunch of small buckets.

A careful and meticulous cleaning... and A CASE! Cases are a pain to build, particularly in that size range, but they are essential if any quality model is to survive. It isn't just the dust, or the vagaries of a chance impact. The dust and airborne chemicals will eventually degrade the materials and the model will be no more. But I bet you knew that...

Too true, and we were amazed it hasn't had one before. It will be getting a case (7+' x 5' x 2') fastened to a sturdy table and a location out of direct sunlight. Very lucky that it hasn't suffered damage yet. A four year old child (spoiled brat according to rumors) will be rampant.

It is a good example of what NOT TO DO. Build a beautiful model, or buy one and do not put it in a case.
Try using cotton swaps with a little water. Very little water.
You probably will never get it completely clean . Lets hope the model builder used beeswax on the rigging.
It is a real problem for model builders . If they buy a case, then they will not make any money at all.
If they do not sell it with a case, then the model will get ruined.
A real conundrum.

Marvelous. When it is clean and just before the encasement, it would be great to have detailed photographs, some showing various components and some of the whole model......all from various angles. Maybe with a sheet in the background. I'll post the photos/captions on a website if there is no other more appropriate site available (the photos would show up here in a thread).
It's difficult to get such varying perspectives when photographing a real ship like this. [edit: probably not technically a ship, maybe a frigate]

Before and after detailed photos will be taken....
If its commanding officer is a post captain, it is a frigate. If by chance he is an admiral, the Constitution would immediately become at least a fourth rate ship of the line.
