Are there any "sites" or "plans" out there concerning building of a folding canoe or kayak?
The internal skeleton being made of wood, of course.

Yost's folders are constructed from aluminum tubing and HDPE (plastic) cross frames. They all seem to be quite narrow and might not please a casual paddler.
The only wood framed do-it-yourself designs I have run across is the old Percy Blandford designs. One is about 12½ ft and the other is about 17 ft. The plans are still available from Clark Craft in Buffalo for $30 per.

I have folded kevlar/glass composite kayaks.
The important point is to get out BEFORE it folds.
You can usually repair the mess and get back on the water - but its seldom competitive.

"The important point is to get out BEFORE it folds"
...ain't that the truth. I had a friend who accidentally stuffed the bow of his fiberglass slalom kayak between a couple branches of a downed tree. He flipped, the boat folded on his legs until the stern hit the bottom in about three feet of water, pinning him inside. He drowned with about four people standing there furiously trying to get him out of the boat.

Now that I'll have to room, I've got to decide on a folder to build myself. smile.gif
