At last an English Raid (http://www.raidengland.org/)-- Modesty prevents me saying who built the website! The entry list is almost full already, so be quick if you're interested.

Fun I'm sure, but I hope the site and event work better than the link for me.

Ooh-er - the Solent. Not sure I'd want to be out there in those 10' and 11' boats.

Website is lovely. The only possible improvement might be a marked chart with the general route on it, as some readers and/or pressmen may not be familiar with the listed harbours and sailing grounds.

Yes the chart or satellite photo with route is next to go up! Many of the fleet are a local class, the Lymington River Scow, I think they can take care of themselves. This is not exactly a remote wilderness, compared to most Raids, the organisers are feeling their way.

Well herding cats is notoriously tricky, and the resulting speed disparity across the fleet (already with monos from 10 to 28ft!) would give the accompanying support craft a problem!

Great idea.. the Portuguese use the word for any organized blast... mini dakars, horseback to Madrid and back,regattas....

I miss the pillage and carrying off the maidens bit though.

Well, yes. It is. Even if I bought this 30 squaremetre, I still own my BM-Jolle. And that would be fun on the solent, never have been there before...

OK there is now a aerial photo/map link in the sidebar on the site

Very nice site -- thank you! Love the rig on HAGAR, the Swedish pilot boat. (See below.) Does anyone know more about MOLLY, the "American Whaleboat" built in GRP? The entry list says she was designed by Edey and Duff ... I didn't know they designed a whaleboat.

Steve...

Dick perhaps knows more.....but there is an extensive article on Molly in WaterCraft #51. The hull was molded by Edey & Duff, it is "exact replicas of the Charles Beetle whaleboat".

Surely I wouldn't. May work well enough but I can't see how from here. We have seen such small dinghies in Brest and Morbihan, but they were kept in sheltered waters by the organisers when conditions got windy.

Eh? Keyhaven and Lymington both have very active fleets of 11 foot scows - folks who look like they are having a fine time.

Stunning split screen map utility - which displays the OS map and the Google Aerial view at the same time....

Exactly. She is believed the only one in Europe, her original UK owner is related to Edey, or Duff, or someone there. There is a fleet of them somewhere on the US E Coast which are regularly raced under oars. She is an exciting sail, even with a rig slightly reduced from the original design. Spars, and oars, are carbon fibre. I believe the rig on a whaleboat was huge as its main use was stealthy approach to a whale in the very light airs frequently encountered in the tropics, it's too large for regular use in British conditions.

Here is yours truly (white hat, dark jacket) helping to pull her in pouring rain in Plymouth Sound in 2008. Her owner Geoff sitting behind me. On that day we had prolonged fun getting back out of the narrow neck of the River Tamar against the full flood of 5kts or so. The plan had been to race to the Eddystone lighthouse and back but the conditions put paid to that.

Molly's hull is GRP foam sandwich. She was fitted out in teak, by boatbuilder Colin Henwood at Henley in the UK.

I am sure they have. But by the time the BayRaiders in the fleet would have a fine time, the small boats probably won't any more. Just physics, no disrespect.
'nuff said. We'll see the reports after the summer.

Nice - where's "Keyhavenpotterer"?

Keyhavenpotterer met with one of the organisers before Christmas, and would love to do this event, however a worsening balance problem means I can manage a single day race, but not three days running if the weather is bad. After a windy club race, the next day I am hardly fit to walk the dogs, but ok by the next weekend. Talk about a screwed up retirement - seeing the specialist again in May. It amazes me how many sailors I meet who also have balance problems.

As far as racing the 11'6" Scows in the Solent. Don't you doubt it. They are out 2,3 4 times a week pottering all over the Solent and racing regularly in any wind that comes along.

Here they are racing in last years nationals in quite a breeze

That's good to hear. There may still be a challenge to the safety boats presented by the wide disparity of boats sizes & therefore speeds, but I'm sure Geoff & George will have thought about that.

George and I, when we met at Keyhaven Yacht Club discussed how each group would have it's own support boats.

The great shame is that we had hoped Keyhaven Yacht Club could supply facilities and support boats for the Raid, but when the 2010 program was issued it turned out that Keyhaven Sailing Week is the same dates as the Raid, so our club support boats will be fully occupied supporting the Week.

It's a great fun event with racing each day from Saturday to Saturday, about 40 dinghies out. At least for me it means if I am having a bad dizzy day I can miss a day and then race the next day.
