last year a skipper asked me to price up changing the round stern on his 28 mt trawler to a square stern, & also asked for the price of a new boat
last night at 4 am this trawler sank, whether thru tiredness, drunkenness, couldntcarelessness or otherwise has yet to be discovered
of course it may have been a simple mistake, or dodgy autopilot

The Morwenna
10-11-2010, 04:08 AM
About post # 168 by Lucky Luke...or Rantanplan?
Yesterday I found a post full of grief about the refit of The Morwenna. This is my answer, and I presume you will receive answers from others peoples you have insulted too.
I think you should have thought long and hard before writing your comments about The Morwenna's refit.
I own The Morwenna since more than twenty years now and, as you know, I know her better than anyone else and I am perfectly aware of the beauty of the design and construction.
You should have had the decency to contact me personally if you had remarks or questions about the restoration (you have my email since a long time) before insulting me and trying to ruin the reputation of a yard on an open forum.
The Morwenna's refit has been conducted as close as the original.
We (I also speak for the yard ) would be very stupid to make shortcuts on a boat like Her, as:
a) This refit is maybe the last she will have (who knows of the availability of wood and boats carpenter in 50 years).
b) I hate « cosmetic restorations »: for me the most important part is the structure - hull, deck, rigging rudder.
c) The yard had plenty of time to think and work, there was no time pressure, and we would be very stupid not making a top notch work.
Now let's go over your criticisms - or should I say insults?
Morwenna had one of the most beautiful decking you can ever see, with deck planks starting along the king plank first (which king plank was narrower at the ends - at least they have respected that!)
The deck is still exactly as it was, except teak replacing the original Kauri.
The kingplanks have the same dimension than the old ones.
Every measures of the original deck have been recorded before dismantling it. Templates have been made.
and then each plank nicely narrowed each end,
The planks are still nicely narrowed each ends.
gradually coming to a shape close to that of the gunwale .
This one I do not get it, sorry.
Where they were nicely holly splined,
and not bluntly squared like it is now by this bunch of bloody damn cowboys!!! .
They were indeed holy splinned which is very nice, but we think it is better to have a bigger end to the planks as they are already quite narrow. Did I say they were narrowed at the end? :)
not to mention such wide king planks...varnished! ...confusing sailing and ice skating!
As already mentionned, the kingplanks are the same width as the original, you think it is wider because the first deck plank is also varnished. (Do not make certitude on low resolution pictures).
It was quite common practice to varnish wide planks in order to limit shrinkage under the sun.
As for the ice skating I am not a specialist, I use skis instead.
I had bought the best plywood you can find on the market from Contreplaques Charles, with the intent to redo the whole decking since beams were rotten on top
If your self importance tolerates a remark, I think it is bad practice to put plywood on rotten beams.
they could easily have rectified this little "wave" there was in the deck, at the level of the foremast, as the picture you have posted shows (although slightly blurred there), but do you think that these cowboys even noticed it?
The "cowboys" noticed several problems in the sheerline or more precisely on the deck, especially near the runner fitting, the sheerline was corrected and I don’t see any problem on the picture you mention.
One common thing with boats having the maximum beam forward is that you can have a wave effect from some points of view, this is well known.
But maybe you mean we should have moved the minimum freeboard at max beam level.
I will certainly think about it next time.
You can of course come to the yard to check by yourself, I am not sure you will be most welcome by the cowboys/cochons/bathtube sailors but I can take care of your security. ;)
This is my answer. The least would be from you to appologize on this forum.

Greg ive only picked up the ply patterns off the loft floor so far, i shall have to wait to buy some oak or acacia for sawn frames, which are maybe 45 mm x 120 mm at turn of bilge , spaced 400, with intermediate 30 x 50 bent frames, 140 sided centreline, & maybe 30 mm larch planking

About post # 168 by Lucky Luke
Yesterday I found a post full of grief about the refit of The Morwenna. This is my answer, and I presume you will receive answers from others peoples you have insulted too.
Yes, quite some grief, and with good reasons.
When I saw the picture posted by Peter, and then went to the site of "Chantier du Guip", and saw these pictures of the new deck, I was very sorry to see how this deck had been redone!
This being said, and whatever the reasons why I am specially sensitive to anything that concerns this boat (and you know why!), I should not have expressed my anger in an insulting way to the people who did this work. I do not agree on some parts of what they did, but besides that they have done some obviously great work, and I apologize for the words I have used.
I own The Morwenna since more than twenty years now and, as you know, I know her better than anyone else and I am perfectly aware of the beauty of the design and construction.
I am just as aware as you are of the intrinsic beauty of this boat, this is not your exclusivity, and I have given her as much love and care as you did. Had I not done what I did to save her, you and her might now be at the bottom of the oceans, after she would have dropped her whole keel and ballast. Maybe even she would have turned into firewood, or be rotten to death, left where she was when I rescued her.
You should have had the decency to contact me personally if you had remarks or questions about the restoration (you have my email since a long time) before insulting me and trying to ruin the reputation of a yard on an open forum.
Why not contact you (again)? You have the response in the mail I just sent you. Sorry people for that personal bit.
Now let's go over your criticisms - or should I say insults?
(Originally posted by Lucky Luke): "Morwenna had one of the most beautiful decking you can ever see, with deck planks starting along the king plank first (which king plank was narrower at the ends - at least they have respected that!")

The king plank design has been respected, absolutely. But not the rest of the planking. Anybody looking at the pictures I have posted: the original and the refit, can see that.
...
(Originally posted by Luck Luke:..."gradually coming to a shape close to that of the gunwale")
This one I do not get it, sorry.
That is the problem.
It seems (?) that the width of the planks gradually diminishes aft in the refit, but not forward, or not visibly. This departs from the original, and not in the prettiest way.
What I mean is that, with the planks started with a slight curve running along the curved shape of the king planks, and becoming gradually wider at max. beam, but narrower at the ends, the planks finally come to a more curved shape, close to that of the gunwale (or covering board= virure de plat bord), but no quite, being still nibbed into it. Very elegant, indeed!
Originally posted by Lucky Luke:"....where they were nicely holly splined, and not bluntly squared like it is now by this bunch of bloody damn cowboys!!!")
They were indeed holy splined which is very nice, but we think it is better to have a bigger end to the planks as they are already quite narrow. Did I say they were narrowed at the end? :)
...and that is what you guys did wrong! Departing from the original which has stood the test of years because "you think", and not having the good taste to do it more nicely is definitely what got me on my toes!
I repeat, though: I should not have called "bloody damn cowboys" people who, besides that, did some really good job.

Where did I say the kingplanks departed from the original??? I can very well see they are OK. Actually, they were of very good teak, not kauri like the rest of the decking, and I never even suspected that they had been replaced. Why...??? I dunno.
For what is to have them varnished: yes, that is right: for yachts staying in marinas, it was common practice to have them varnished, and for the reasons you cite. I am surprised, though, that a person with your sailing experience, specially on that boat which heels easily hard over, does not consider the danger of having such a wide area of the deck with slippery varnish. She had stayed with me years, in the sun of the Mediterranean, without these planks moving. However, that was "with good intentions" for the boat, so I shall respect that. Have fun skiing the mountains of Switzerland...and may you not fall overboard.

If I mention that the beams were rotten on top, where do you see that my works, which were already extensive - although with limited means that obliged me to temporary shortcuts like the frames or stem repair - would have excluded such an easy one as to replace the beams once all the decking would have been off????
Who is insulting who, there?
Originally posted by Lucky Luke:" ....they could easily have rectified this little "wave" there was in the deck, at the level of the foremast, as the picture you have posted shows (although slightly blurred there), but do you think that these cowboys even noticed it?")

As a man with a few dozen years of yacht design behind him, this "S" shape is something I quite well know about. Thank you.
And this is not what I am talking about....but perhaps you did not notice it ??? It shows well on the picture Peter posted! Right at the level of the foremast, the deck had/ has a bump. This bump corresponds a slight hogging she suffered, that was not all along but only forward, about her maximum beam. This was visible when looking at the sheer line from the right angle, and not where it naturally shows a "S" shape.
This picture is taken after the frames, beams, stem, decking were re-done, and this has been left there. It would be an extremely strange coincidence that a distorsion from the camera has created this exactly in the place where it was :D
It is a pity that is had not been rectified! A pity!
You can of course come to the yard to check by yourself, I am not sure you will be most welcome by the cowboys/cochons/bathtub sailors but I can take care of your security. ;)
This is my answer. The least would be from you to apologize on this forum
OK. considering the otherwise nice job that has been done in many other places, I apologize (again!) fro calling them guys at the "Chantier Naval du Guip": cowboys, cochons. and the Bathtub sailor, that would have been you, which you definitely are not.
Then, while they are capable of such works, why not do it right all the way? They had, as you say, plenty of time. Where is she now: still there? I don't know....and maybe I don't really want to know!
I have given to this boat a few years of my life and all what I had under the sun!. She was soon, very soon, going to be a wreck beyond repairs, she had been scuttled of near all of her interior, much of her gear, and was going to be the prey of more vultures, she was nothing but a mushroom growing field, and only owned to her construction quality to have stood so long in conditions that would have just completely destroyed any other boat not that well built. She was in a legal entanglement that only a person with the most profound dedication, as I did, could have cleared her from this mess. Took me a year just for that.
AND YOU KNOW IT!!!!!!!!
So, Stephane, Morwenna owner: if you have any respect for that boat, you have to show some to me also, for what I did for her, and which allows you to be her proud owner today, and not react like an offended kid to founded critics, but reckon what you owe to others before you.

Sorry dear fellow forumnites, and specailly you, Peter, for this looooong reply to Morwenna's present owner post. It is not really off-topic in this "Woodenboat boatbuilder" post, but certainly not the most entertaining one.
As it happens, I have just received a mail from "The Morwenna" that puts things in a different perspective, for me at least.
Maybe a thread about this boat, her past with me, and then her last twenty years, would be ....well.... we shall see!!!

Dear Peter, Larks,
This boat still now remains a very painful story for me, and although I may occasionally post a couple of the very few pics I have from that time, I do not really feel like exposing the whole of her story here! To say that she was "lost in a divorce" is a very elegant way to describe a pure, flat robbery and abuse of confidence by a #%^*)#& bitch! May she suffer till her last breath and burn in hell forever!

Lucky that's what happen when you break the only rule I keep with my boats. NEVER go back on a boat that you have sold, it's always deception as it's not like you want/or see it. I did this mistake once, and now even when I am invited on one of my old boat I decline, it always open a old scar.

Beam: 4.34 m.
Draft: 2.98 m.
Berthon Boat Company Shipyard, where in 1925 he built the Mairie, which then would be Vanessa, the Concha y Analía now called, is one of the oldest English shipyards are still functioning and, since its founding over 200 years ago , is still owned by the same family, May, big fans of water sports.
Like other ships built by Berthon and designed by the great Scottish naval architect Alfred Mylne, Mairie was also awarded the Cross of Malta rating of Lloyd's Register, by the very high quality construction and design. Five years later, under the name Vanessa was purchased by its first owner Spanish: D. Sans Miguel Mora, unforgettable character, drive and a key figure of the nautical sports Spanish and European, who for over twenty years he, with enthusiasm and success, the position of Commodore of the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona and President of the International Committee of the Mediterranean.
In 1930, Mr. Sans I moved to Spain and, following family tradition, I renamed CONCHA II, participating with him, with excellent results in many races, among which include the first organized in Barcelona after the Civil War with the Barcelona-Palma route.
Memory of that period and the importance of the analysis in the RCNB are the different models and paintings that, even today, 80 years later, decorate some of the dependencies thereof, including most notably a remarkable painting of José María Prim, in which is represented with its original rigging and sails perfectly oriented, as befits a painter who knew so much about sailing.
Don Miguel Concha II sold in 1947 to D. Beaman Ramón del Río, substituting another equally emblematic ship, the Altair. In Palma underwent a major restructuring, which included the replacement of the original gaff rig the current Marconi. In the early 50's, had several owners and underwent several name changes and early 60's, was acquired by Conde de Estrada, who changed his name to Analia, with which sails today. They did it in honor of Hispanic actress Gade Analia Argentina, very popular at that time.
Between 1970 and 1990, he returned to Catalonia Analía hand D. Marti Mariano Ventosa, who based it on Aiguadolç until the mid 90's, is purchased by a French company, Mr. Boissier, who with him across the Atlantic in 1998, later moved to Cannes, where it sets its base, being a regular in the classic regattas of the Mediterranean.
In 2,010 it is acquired by its present owner, who again bases on the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona, while rushing a new and careful restoration, during which he will build a teak deck identical to the original, being that as base, otherwise seeking the preservation of all its elements and, as far as possible, while maintaining by far the Marconi rig, the recovery of its original appearance.
The Analía is constructed entirely of teak, while furniture and interior woodwork is of mahogany and teak, iroko floors. Call particular attention to your living room, completely original and many details, also original, such as pulleys, faucets or toilets. Equally important defeat his booth, shell-shaped molded wood masterfully executed, an innovation of the time, which gives it a particular and unmistakable personality. They say it was a change designed by Mr. Sans Mora, who knows? The truth is that in the Twenties / Thirties molded wood was an absolute novelty and even bizarrely original and Alfred Mylne and a lover of news, or gallantry ...

Design: Philip Rhodes
Construction: Abeking & Rasmussen
Year: 1956
Length: 13.12 m.
Beam: 3.42 m.
Draft: 2.40 m
Alba was born with the name of Honey in the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen has always been one of the best in the world and designed by Philip Rhodes, the great master teachers naval architects.
With the same design, inspired by the lines of very victorious yawl Carina 53-foot, winner including the Transatlantic Newport-Santander, 1957, A & R built four sister ships, which differed in details of the rig, sloop or yawl, cover the maneuver, cane or wheel, but also even by differences at the hull, keel or retractable. Alba, in particular, is a yawl, with rudder and keel cane, which is a very American and as close to the design of Carina, the keel also.
Among its owners, was the famous French Chef André Surmain, the founder of Lutece in Manhattan. Just Honey Surmain brought to the Mediterranean, during the 70's. In the following decade, in the hands of Swiss architect Marc Baillart, under the name of hope, Alba sailed throughout the Mediterranean, visiting the most remote places. Both owners kept the boat in its complete originality and when the famous Italian collector bought Ugo Baravalle precisely its originality was one of the most important virtues that convinced him to buy.
Today Alba surfing at Barcelona, under the rule of President of our neonatal Association and continues to be a happy coincidence that one of their twins, built by A & R in the distant '50s, the Fair Winds, is today owned President of the Association of Australian Classic boats! (How interesting challenge could be organized ...).

Almaren born as Swell (Wave) and is the third ship built for the famous class of New Yorker 32 (NY32), designed by Olin Stephens, for the famous substuir designed by Nat Herreshoff NY30. For Stephens, then very young, it was a huge success, and he had to win in a contest Yacht Club of New York to the best cabinets of Naval Architects of time.Among the losers were counted last names of the caliber of Alden, Luders or Payne. This class, as many (might say, all) of the initial projects Stephens, owes much of its design to the International Formula, for which the young Olin designed several 6-meter boats were his first great success. With respect to a "metric formula," the boats NY32 are much higher freeboard and therefore more livable and adapted to sailing in height, which was one of the requirements of the competition. Almar is also the only NY32 sailing in Europe and this is due to a passionate Italian to his country led him to undertake a major restoration work. Today, it remains a very fast boat in the race and not only classics, no!: Almaren is able to paste a shock to many modern boats regatta, their grandchildren.

Design: John G. Alden
Construction: Hodgdon Brothers
Year: 1930
Length: 18.10 m.
Beam: 4.38 m.
Draught: 2.52 m.
The Malabar X, the tenth ship of his own personal designer, the renowned American architect John Gale Alden, is one of the largest ships in the history of recreational marine design. It was the last staff Alden schooner, which was always closely linked to this type of rig and was also the most victorious in their personal boats, thus marking the culmination of the career of the architect. In 1930 he won the Bermuda Race in its category and in 1932 returned to win in general, the only time this has happened, from our very own boat designer. Moreover, in this last race, five Alden schooners were classified in the first ten positions. It was the swan song of the American Schooner, condemned the lack of a large spinnaker for bearings bearing, due to the foremast too low. The Malabar X was affected by Hurricane Bob, which launched him onto the pier for mooring, with serious damage. Shortly after, he was bought for 35,000 dollars, as stated in the documentation of Lloyd's Register and subjected to a meticulous reconstruction, under the supervision of the Alden firm, who still works in Boston, where the original parts are easily recognized. Today sailing gracefully through the waters of the Mediterranean with Spanish flag and port of registry in Barcelona.

That is where the borderline between a ketch and a schooner could get a bit grey!
On this "sailing vessel", the largest sail (main sail) appears to be on the foremast, but in the other hand the aftermost mast is taller than the foremast, making it a schooner since, as far as I know, it is the main mast - not the sail - that is the "determining factor". I reckon that, as far as handling the two gaff sails is concerned, sailing her would be very much like a ketch, but the size of the jib makes her a schooner (again!)
Would that foremast have been designed to carry a topsail, as the main does, with then bigger jib and staysail, that would have made her a ketch.
So, all in all: she is a schooner!
P.S.: this same "odd" proportions in size of sail and size of masts is found on some baltic traders (most were undeniably ketches).

I couldn't believe my eyes when she capsized. Even less when they righted her again. What a monumental effort by all. Hows all the people standing at attention across the spars. All these amazing events, so huge and relevant at the time, to slowly fade as the years wipe grey, the colourful, boisterous past and the things that helped shape today. It is a treasure to be able to watch these magnificent films. Thanks mate.
You mean you laughed your head off?
What a miserable, ridiculous, obscene launching.!....and you know: this was just a few decades ago...when some of these "engineers" were writing books about Naval Architecture!
Hilarious!
No, Kerry: thiese are not pictures of a colorful, boisterous past but of the beginning of a miserable era of pretentious, incapable clique of politicians, bankers, fake technicians, used car salesmen and technocrates allied together to create the miserable world we live in today! I do not have the slightest respect for the bunch of cretins that did this monster piece of ultimate connerie!

after near 50 years when i removed the monel screws from the teak and mahogany planking in oak frames, because they had been put in with tallow half the screws were hand tight, this yacht was designed by john bain and built by james silver of rosneath, with all teak interior, underwater planking, deck and super structure, the topsides were mahogany ,

ONLY computer people call those that do not know computers "cripples or computer illiterate."
A mechanic does not call you mechanically illiterate just because you do not know how all the parts of your car work. Now do they?

Ducking & diving about the Net, I ventured upon a website for a boatyard in Galicia, where they posted photographs of their work in 2001-02. IMO the vessel has the sweetest lines I've seen in a long time. View in Spanish as the English version is a lot shorter. http://www.modelismonaval.com/magazine/ribera/carpinteriaribera01.htm

one day a man on a mission walked into the yard where we repaired narrowboats, he told me he had a bolinder engine, & he was looking for a narrowboat to put it in, i asked him did he want a rotten boat or a sound boat,
rotten he said, then he could take his time rebuilding it, we walked over to where 2 boats were moored together, a coke can had floated between them & sunk one of them, your in luck said i, we have what you want,
6 grand to rebuild the bow
9 grand for the stern
& your divorce lawyer can advise you on the bit inbetween
fine he said, where do i sign

Not sure I follow all of the above, but this business with narrowboats...
I've long thought that it would be amazing to rent a narrowboat (england) one summer and bobble from town to town for a while. Does this post indicate that you have some connection with the same?

...and I recognize this atmosphere. Could have been my boat in the first shots.
But what's the idea? I'm a little lost.
