View Full Version : My belated Impressions of Port Townsend.... photo Impressions that is...
In September I went to the 33rd Annual Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend ... and met some very nice people... and as a Photographer, I took lots of pics.... Back then a few threads were started with some of the pics I had also taken ... so ... I kinda got busy and forgot about it... leaving my folder of images on my desktop since then...
I recently looked thru the images and thought I'd post some images of the boat show along with other interesting subjects ... Overall, I met a lot of really nice folks that I hope to see again in the years to come.... Nice folks along with some good music every night... it was a great time.
A portion of the harbor over the deck of one of my all time favorite boats... the BB25...

The unfinished hull in the shop is a bespoke boat designed and built by the new shop forman, Kees Prince - a most talented guy, for a local. The rather odd looking masts were pipe set there to show people more or less what they'd look like. They're in tabernacles.
BTW, the red building is the Wooden Boat Foundation's gorgeous new shop, not the NW School of Wooden Boatbuilding's digs which are several miles south in Port Hadlock.
Thanks for the memories.

Nothing wrong with leering :)

In September I went to the Port Townsend in the water boat show...... R
Very Nice!
Just one small quiet unassuming comment: In these parts it's known as the Wooden Boat FESTIVAL. We go out of our way to make it a festival.....a celebration of wood boats.....as opposed to that prissy show kind of thing our sponsors sponsor on the other coast. The details of the next one are not posted yet, but it will be the 34th Annual Wooden Boat Festival, September 10-12, 2010. Check back at the Wooden Boat Foundation website (http://www.woodenboat.org/) for updates.
Call it a show if you want......but come take some more good photos.

There was boat stuff in the photos? I didn't notice that.
The information the cat-ketch above that was on the wall in the Wooden Boat School ... These images should cover most of the details... sorry the quality is not better... but they were just pics from my camera...

I thought the following interior was quite interesting... but I can't remember which boat it was. The boats at the festival were very close packed, so in many cases it was difficult to get good pics of the exterior of the boats. This interior was cool in my estimation... so I shot it.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e239/Prestoboat/Misc%202009%20Aug/woodboatcabincls-72-1.jpg
Overall, I think I found as many interesting shots at the local Marina as the actual Boat Festival....
I appreciate the close-ups of the rigging detail, the deadeyes etc. I hope you don't mind if I saved a few.
When I first became interested in wooden boats I was always disappointed at the lack of detail photos of boats I became interested in. Now, when I get an opportunity, I always try to capture interesting detail photos for future reference, especially if the boat in question is a classic. Please feel free to use any images you need for future reference. I must have taken 150 photos of Araminta and Alerion when I went to Mystic....
Thanks again for the comments.... looking forward to the next festival...

Rod: I think you should come out and take pictures of my boat, you could make her look really pretty! Hoping to leave the shop in ~ 18 months.
Cecil,
Lots of folks don't realize what great photos you can get of your boat if you have a couple of slylights in the roof of your shop. Bob Albers, the builder of Susan, has these and it makes a world of difference in the lighting I get there taking photos of his build not to mention good light for working.
More pics Cecil.. of the Kahuna...

There are lots of these.

This is, I believe, the former Brora Thor that spent many years in our neck of the woods. Built in BC in the 1920s and originally designed as a schooner, it was fitted with big engines instead and put to use as a tug. It did not see sails until the 1980s when it was finally rigged as a bald headed gaffer:

Maybe it would be possible to check out your shop the day before the show opens...
Hope to see you there...
