Court won't close locks; Carp DNA in Lake Michigan TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The U.S. Supreme Court refused on Tuesday to order the immediate closure of shipping structures near Chicago to contain the ravenous Asian carp, before authorities said DNA from the invaders had been found in Lake Michigan for the first time.

Speakin g (posting) as a resident of Illinois, I believe it to be paramount that the locks be colsed now, only to be opened after it is somehow PROVEN BEYOND DOUBT that Aisian Carp are under control by some other means.

Having Supereme Courts or Mickey Mouse Courts play Mickey Mouse Games is unacceptable.

Need I remind readers here that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is a Repub Bush Apointee? Try blaming THIS on Obama.

Well, the Supreme Court did what President Obama asked them to do:

Obama Backs Home State in Asian Carp Battle; Michigan Cries Favoritism Jan. 9, 2010
Michigan has reacted angrily to the Obama administration's decision to back Illinois -- the president's home state -- in a lawsuit about how to stop Asian carp from infesting the Great Lakes.
On Tuesday, U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reject Michigan's lawsuit against Illinois. The lawsuit calls for the closure of two Chicago locks on a key commercial canal that connects Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River.

But he's willing to talk about it

Obama administration willing to have summit on Asian Carp
Published January 21 2010
The White House is offering to meet with Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle and other Midwest leaders about Asian Carp in the Great Lakes.
On Tuesday, Doyle and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm asked for a White House summit on Asian Carp and other invasive species in the lakes. That was after federal officials announced Asian Carp DNA has been found in a Lake Michigan harbor, and the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a request to temporarily shut Chicago area locks, that the states say may be letting the carp get to the lakes.

Interesting. From Tim's link, the case might proceed, the Court simply refused to issue an immediate injunction.

But its denial of the injunction doesn't necessarily mean the court would rule against Michigan and its allies if the full case came before the justices, said Noah Hall, an environmental law professor at Wayne State University.
"It just means you have to wait to get your day in court," Hall said. "But the danger is that by the time the Supreme Court does hear the case, the carp will already be in Lake Michigan."
Wonder when the argument might happen...all the Great Lakes states except Illinois and Indiana want to close the locks.

Michigan, joined by Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Ontario, asked the Supreme Court to order the locks closed as a stopgap measure while considering a permanent separation between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi basin.

No more bass boat hillbillys going 100mph across White Lake waking me up at 5am.

The way I read the story, the horse is already out of the barn.

Trying to convince ANY "politician" of the imminence of an environmental threat is like trying to stop Sisyphus climbing.

"Aisan Carp" may be a major red-flag to you and me, but - trust me - unless there is a good "photo-op" or chance of a nationally-linked news story, 99% of our "electid offishulz" could give a (an occurence of airborne intercourse with a perambulating pastry) about it.

"Good luck with THAT one, Kid!"

Our countrys largest water resource is at stake and we continue to worry about money! This country is doomed to fail and quickly at that. Nothing works anymore and we the sheeple sit and do nothing.
Maybe Canada should declare war over this - how about it canuks?

It would appear you are correct. The grabbers are grabbing all they can in the final moments. To hell with everyone and everything else.

Only partially in jest, but is there some way to make the carp a commercially viable species? I am sure that it would then be over harvested into extinction. One of my early short stories was that the earth was being invaded by a crustacean like alien species. The military powers of the world were unable to stop them, but somewhere along the line it was discovered by some good-'ol-boy that they tasted better than crab or lobster. You can guess the rest of my story.

A bounty wouldn't work because folks would just keep breeding them in local waters for the cash.

My daughter, who worked for this kind of thing as a biologist for the US Fish and Wildlife dept., had an interesting twist on this one. Seems the anerobic water in the canal once kept alien species from coming into the Great Lakes. The US EPA wanted the water cleaned up, and that effectively meant the natural/unnatural barrier was gone. The electric weirs were installed as a preventive measure, but don't seem as effective as the former pollution.

All the carp in the Great Lakes are Asian alien species. The new ones are a bit more voracious, and jump a lot. They are as edible as the existing ones.

Seriously this could make high speed power boats obsolete on the lakes.

There was a thread about this earlier....there are carp fisheries on the Mississippi that cater to the Asian trade, and some european cultures eat carp. A magazine that covers the upper mississippi sponsored a carp recipe contest for local restaurants.
