My son and I are considering building one of the Ben Garveys by Doug Hylan; we prefer the shorter (15'9") design but would like to have the midship console of the longer (19') design. Has anyone tackeled this or does anyone have any thoughts on this?

dr3,

I would imagine (I'm looking at the article on the boats in issue No. 9 of Mike O'Brien's "Boat Design Quarterly") that the smaller boat could be built with a center console. I'd advise dropping Doug Hylan a line, and getting his thoughts. It may be a simple matter (for him) to say "put it here" and include a copy of the detail drawing for the console (or the general arrangement) from the larger boat. Might be a little scaling involved, but the ergonomics don't change with the size of the boat.

Good luck!

I have built garveys with center consoles of 16 foot size and never had a problem with it. You must be aware of materials that you build it out of for the weight issue.

Wiley and Oyster..Thank you for responding to our question. I thought we could adapt the center console to the smaller boat and it's nice to see agreement. Do you have information on the boat boat in the the picture you poated, Oyster?
Thanks again,
Dave (dr3) and Scott

The Jimbo plan from Glen-L I think is a nice center console. The boat in the picture is of my own design. We do the center consoles to fit the boat and to allow at least 15 to 16 inch walk on deck area. Depending on the rails or coaming and construction methods, you can modify the center console to suit.
