Given the deep freeze that Europe is in, I wonder if my favorite sporting event will be held this year?

De Elfstedentocht (http://www.elfstedentocht.nl/)

24 hours, 200km, 11 cities in Friesland...on skates. 16,000+ skaters. Last held in 1997. The winner was a farmer named Henk Angenent with a winning time of 6 hours, 49 minutes and 18 seconds.

The route is circular: Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker, Dokkum and back to Leeuwarden.

A couple pictures of the 1997 Elfstedentocht:

Ah memories ... I was at, but not in, what I thought was the last eleven towns race about 1984??? As a keen skier but not a langlaufer and certainly not a skater I remember more the absence of the event after, as it tied in with the period of poor snow in the alps generally and therefore poor skiiing... I was out of europe in '97 so that one passed me by...
If you ever get the chance go... like you haven't lived ( sporting - wise ) unless you've seen a mille miglia, Le Mans 24 hours, an FA cup final, Wales England at Twix or CAP, Sporting or Benfica v Real or Inter ....Miguel Indurain (sp?) on the mountain. any tall ships meeting...Add yours....

What kind of unrefuelled range does a Zamboni have?

We don't use zamboni's out side of the ring :)
We just hook up some sort of device on a car and get goin....

I did an "alternative" 11 city 200km race myself in 1996. (Austria)
My skating buddy did the original twice and the alternative a bunch of times as well.
It is hard to get a starting permit though and for now it seems very unsure whether there will be a race this year..... Ah well, I am not in good shape anyway

I know Heeg, small town in Friesland.
Most sailors here know it, because it is right next to the Heegermeer, which offers some pristine sailing areas ;)
