I don't post much on this forum, but I live just down the bay from Chuck (Paladin).
He had a stent installed in his heart a few weeks ago, his third stent since his trouble began. Christmas eve he had another heart attack, not a good one. As it turns out he has extreme heart damage as a result of his Vietnam days. For those that don't know, Chuck was in a combat zone, first as a military person, then as a civilian working for MACV, Military assistance command, the folks that train local militaries.
Chuck has an extremely dangerous heart arythmia, brought on by injuries over there. He was wounded three times to ground fire, and also won three purple hearts and 2 bronze stars, plus a host of Vietnamese medals. Each time while flying a rescue mission. I was one of those saved.
They operate in the morning, again. His heart doctor, who was on vacation at the time, said he should never have been allowed to leave the hospital. He really has no family on this side of the U.S. so your prayers are politely requested. I'm going to delete this before he gets to come home. I will post any news that I hear.

Please do. Geez I hope he's gonna be okay. Really, a lot. How like him that he didn't want to worry anyone here.

01-05-2010, 09:50 PM
Thanks for the update Chas.
Chuck has family here..... Even if we're not blood.

01-05-2010, 09:50 PM
Thank you for letting us know, but DAMN!:(

01-05-2010, 09:52 PM
Been worrying, and hoping. I'll continue to hope.

01-05-2010, 09:55 PM
I think his siblings have been notified. He has a brother and 3 sisters there. There's a lady nurse that visits him from time to time and he has standing instructions on what to do and who to notify, and who not to notify.

01-05-2010, 10:00 PM
Here's to hoping the best for Chuck.

I don't having a problem saying I LOVE Chuck. He and I have had some wonderful correspondences. I've met him on few occasions, he's sends me gifts as he has sent others. I have his Christmas is front & center on my table as I walk into my place and he is a true friend to all on this forum. My heart is broken and I'm unbeleavably saddened by this news.

Chuck you are in this Bronx Irish altar boys prayers.

Chuck is an easy man to love and to profoundly respect. One of those unusual men who set an example and lead , just because they are stellar models. A life of startling and bigger than life accomplishments always understated. Humble , widely generous , thoughtful, gracious, with a kindly sense of humour.
Yes Chuck you are loved , and your sweet disposition greatly appreciated.
You are and will continue continue to be held up in our prayers...
God bless you , dear friend, we look forward to hearing from you in recovering strength in the near future.
Warmest and very best wishes to you Chuck...

01-06-2010, 12:24 AM
Thank you for the post and news Chas, I guess this is one of those times that Chuck has quietly been warning us about and which we all have wished wouldn't come, but he is in our prayers over here and we look forward to hearing news that he has come through this episode all OK.

01-06-2010, 12:27 AM
Thank you, Chas....I wish Chuck would let us know, but it's just not his way. Prayers winging....

01-06-2010, 12:33 AM
Chuck was in Annapolis today for dialysis, and I think the took him to Anne Arundel center. To the best of my knowledge, they'll either transport him to Washington Hospital (D.C.) tonight or first thing in the morning. The procedure is scheduled for 9 a.m. They only allow family ,members to accompany patients so one of the lady's was going to become "Mrs. Phillips" while he's there, at least in the surgery part. The possibility of a pacemaker was discussed, but Chuck said that they haven't discussed it with him. He said he would give me a call on the cell phone as soon as he got where he was going. Last check they were pumping him fill of prednisone, benedryl and some manner of dope to get him relaxed and so they could give him the dye for the MRI machine as he is deathly allergic to it.
It's bedtime, work tomorrow, so I'll try to post any new news before I leave.

Prednisone to relax? I don't think so... I'm no medico, but I do carry Prednisone.... and hate it. That would be for the allergic reaction at a guess. I need to take it when I stuff up my diet and get a food intolerance reaction. My wife doesn't like being around me when I'm on it. I'm a placid chap... but it produces "roid rage"

01-06-2010, 02:48 AM

Chuck, be well, and get well. You are in our thoughts and prayers and cares, and in the best hands that medicine can provide.

01-06-2010, 05:28 AM
This is grim news indeed. He sounds like a hell of a guy, and I wish him the best of luck.

01-06-2010, 05:45 AM
Chuck has a "DEATHLY" reaction to the drug/iodine dye that they use in high contrast MRI machines. They gave him another dose this morning and have taken him for pictures or something to the operating area. The lady "Dee" is with him. She will let me know how long they will keep him and what they find. The other drugs were to make him relax and sleep. He explained that prednisone and whatever else they give him makes him climb the walls.

01-06-2010, 05:48 AM
Sorry to read this,

I think of Chuck as integral to the forum.

I always look forward to his posts, and I hope he gets back here to make many many more.

01-06-2010, 05:51 AM
prednisone makes me psychotic. Thanks for the update.

Chuck has a "DEATHLY" reaction to the drug/iodine dye that they use in high contrast MRI machines.
We have that in common.
I don't pray but you are in my thoughts mate.

01-06-2010, 05:59 AM
My prayers for you ,Chuck .... I understand the prednisone thing..I have to take 5 mg a day for the rest of my life ...of course taking that much prednisone will shorten my life so i guess thats a good thing .

Take care buddy and we will see you in Mystic !

Damn. :( I knew that old coot wasn't telling me everything. But I respect his need/right to keep things close to the vest. I will put in a prayer right now to the man upstairs! Now I'm even more glad I mad the effort to get together when Shane was in town last June. CHAS, thank you for keeping us updated.

In the meantime... here is Chuck several years ago when we went sailing. Probably one of the earliest Chesapeake EBS.

Ya better do well this morning; we have some more sailing to do!

Chas, thank you for starting this thread, you are a true friend.

All my best wishes go to Chuck

As one of many who have been the recipient of Chuck's generosity, I am keenly aware of his kindness and good humour. It saddens me to hear of his further troubles. Though not a spiritual person, I do believe in the power of positive thought, so if my good will and thoughts can add strength to the prayers being offered I will try to be as giving as Chuck has been.

Be like a Timex, Chuck!

Chas, please keep us informed, if you are able.

Be well friend, be well.

I'm not much in the praying department, but I'll be prayin' for Chuck.

Hang in, "Paladin"!

for others: I have more messages in my "private e-mail" file from Chuck than all others combined. One was a "heads up" that only a guy with Chuck's colorful background might be equiped to send.

Others involve firearms, wherewith he is an "expert" in all phases.

We traded mail once about reloading some rounds of an obscure type and next thing I know, a box of 50 factory-new ammunition arrives in the mail.

Oh damn. I thought something was up. I live just North of Chuck and have always hoped to get him out on my tub. I've communicated with him often and while I knew he was having problems, he never let on just how bad things were. A finer gentleman is hard to find, and a seriously intellegent man. He's just got to recover...he has a book to write! Prayers headed his way.

Hi Chuck -

Please know that all around the world folks are holding you in their hearts and prayers.

Love -

Heavenly Father hear our prayers.

Please know that this is a good man. A kind man. A gentle man. A strong man. A generous man.

Please grant to those caring for him extraordinary knowledge and strength. Grace them with compassion.

Please shield our friend Chuck from pain. From fear. From frustration.

Please surround him with peace so that he feels only comfort.

Please somehow let him know how much we care.

Amen. We agree. Matthew 18:19

A good man on a rough ride. Chuck is a truly larger than life guy and I am proud to know him the little that I do. He has my deepest admiration and respect. He' has been struggling healthwise for a long time. Yet still he has that indominable and giving spirit. We are all a little better off for having his voice in our lives. Gratitude. Hang in there buddy.

01-06-2010, 07:54 PM
Hope you're back on board soon. Best wishes.

01-06-2010, 08:04 PM
wow like Isaid to Chas.....Chucks regular eMails to me about my daughter helping him with Sanskrit lessons and the keel version of the Cheylandra were worded in such a way as to keep this DaNiTaGa (blood brother) fellow halfbreed from even thinking about his return to the hospital. It was all just routine PITA like dialysis.

I personally want to thank everyone for their love of Chuck and prayers. He truely is one of a kind.

01-06-2010, 08:11 PM
All the best Chuck - am a believer in the power of positive thought and and we are thinking positively! A generously spirited person who we need more of in this world.

01-06-2010, 09:03 PM
I'm sorry but I just saw this. I don't know what to say other than that Chuck is in my prayers big-time. One of my major regrets is that I didn't make it to the WBS he was at. I really would have liked to have thanked him personally for so many amazing stories over the years. I really hope I get the chance to do that one day.

Chuc suc khoe, anh Chuck!

Last mail from him (Dec 13th. 09) was quite alarming health-wise, but he just keeps going ahead that guy! Not easy to stop him: read this from this same mail:

"I am still working on my books, and now am getting close. I try to work on them at least 2 days a week, and 3-4 hours each day. I am tired when coming from dialysis.
I have some drawings from the early 70's. I would like some enterprising young man to take the existing line drawings, and re-space the frames to stretch the boat about 3 feet(add 4 inches extra at each frame), add 3-4 inches to the beam, and raise the gun'l 2 inchs. I have rescanned the drawing so that the line drawing is about 1/2 inch to the foot scale.
I am recalculating the work for strip planked bead and cove construction."

Hell of a MAN, Capt. "Chuck" Philips!

Keep fighting my friend!

I haven't been a member of the wooden boat forum very long but there are a number of souls here that I take off my fedora and bow my head in heartfelt respect. Paladin certainly is one of those. God speed his recovery. Another prayer is finding it's way to the source of all.

I've heard that Chuck is through surgery and expects to be in the hospital for a couple of days but has no computer. Neither the person I heard that from nor Chuck knows that everyone knows he's in the hospital. I think it wanted to keep it quiet.

It seems like I'm betraying a confidence, but I know how worried folks are. Heck I couldn't sleep so got up to check this thread and found the other e-mail.

My mother's uncle got a pacemaker and wanted to have it modified with a rheostat so that he could turn it down at night, when your heart is supposed to slow down anyway. He suggested putting the knob for the rheostat under his nipple...:D

This may be a bad decision....I wanted to delete this before Chuck saw it, as I know he would be extremely embarrassed.
Suzie the nurse, is on her way to Washington Hospital to pick him up. He is going to Largo Medical Center. The surgeon that was operating on him could not install stents or use a balloon on the damaged arteries. The will not consider a transplant as his primary artery is still functioning. He will probably be there tonight and tomorrow, then will be transferred to dialysis at either Annapolis or Silver Hill, and then returned home. At about 2 p.m. they were trying to remove the tubes from his arteries and were experiencing some trouble. Suzie said that the surgeon remarked that he was a difficult patient to work on due to the massive scar tissue on his body. He is an ornery old bird. I may have to go into hiding over this, but I thought he needed some cheer.

01-07-2010, 05:26 PM

01-07-2010, 07:19 PM
Too late, you're all busted.....

Man oh Man......Youse guys are all a pretty damned nice bunch and me keyboard is getting damp. I won't be here long...I gotta go eliminate a couple of people....

O.K......Charlie is a blabbermouth...but I love the s.o.b. We've been friends for too long.....and the other weenie...called me last night.....and I think tried to call while we were losing blood all over the damn place......

To cut to the chase...thanks everyone for your well wishes. You're more family than my family. Suzie picked me up and cleared me outta the hospital as "Mrs. Phillips" because they would only let me go with a family member. They can't repair the heart, and will not consider a transplant as long as the main artery functions. I convinced Dr. Huang to let me stay home tonight in my own bed and report to Largo tomorrow. I have no idea what they are considering at this point. I am weak, very much so, and have some very explicit instructions on activities and meds. Dee or Suzie will drive me up in the morning. No more driving for me as it is supposed to be too stressful. Under dialysis my heart rate drops to 40 or less beats and is very irregular at all times. Dr. Huang could not put in a stent or use the balloon thingy that they do as the artery walls are "bruised/hardened or something...stressed.....the kidney is stressing the heart, the heart is stressing the kidney, so I'm screwed no matter which way I go, short of a kidney and heart transplant or a pair of kidneys....I may have to move to Thailand or China.

I'll read the rest of these when I get to come home. I'm extremely tired now and gonna sleep in mine own bed.
and I did see Dave Tabors posting of me piktoor...I musta weighed close to 350 pounds there, about a year after my car accident......I've lost almost 100 pounds since then.

I really love you folks, all of you, except Charlie...he's in for it.....and possibly an international gun smuggler.

01-07-2010, 07:22 PM

[big dumb grin] So glad to see you typing again.

01-07-2010, 08:02 PM
Chuck told me this evening "I have to get a really close match for a kidney, and therein lies my problem....I have an allergy to the anti rejection drugs used.....I think perhaps that's what the conference will cover tomorrow. We will be at the Anne Arundel Center after the meeting at Largo. I was in the process of leaving the Hospital at Washington when they stopped me and took several more blood samples so that they can test for all aspects of the requirements to get as absolute close match as possible."

01-07-2010, 08:03 PM

I still love you man.
Whats the process of matching for a kidney, as far as I know you can live OK with one. I'm healthy as an ox.

It starts with your being the same blood type, O, A, AB but the + or - of your blood type does not matter. Much more complicated than that, but that is the beginning, Perhaps a medico could chime in with an augmented explanation.

Here is a link if you are not an organ/tissue donor already.
Good to see Paladin back, it is tough to keep a good man down.

Dr. Huang could not put in a stent or use the balloon thingy that they do as the artery walls are "bruised/hardened or something...stressed.....

A relative of mine managed to improve things with artery flexibility by following a whacky diet containing lots of cinnamon, flax and omega3 fatty acids. Not sure how effective it is and it probably took quite a while to see results. Just thought I'd mention, you never know what might help...
