I have acquired a 15 ft bolted lapstrake outboard motorboat in " difficult" condition, which I have partially restored.
The only identification on it is a possible serial number carved into the transom, specifically: A2440YC (The 2 and C are not clear). If you please, can you tell me how to find the name of the builder and possibly the date of construction? Many thanks, H.R. Lawrence

The transom number is the Hull Identification Number, required by USCG regs. Give them a call and you should be able to get an anwer out of their DB.

Don't bother with the US Coast Guard. They didn't require hull ID or HIN until November 1972. So anything built before that time was not required to have any ID. It was up to each individual builder to have their own system of ID, if any. Many builders did not have any ID system.
More detail is required to assist you. Detailed description of the vessel, dimensions, photos...
The hull ID could be one from Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. or Cruisers, Inc. It is similar to their ID systems. www.thompsondockside.com (http://www.thompsondockside.com)
