This is Odie. My staffy mix out in the Guide with my wife and I. He loves canoeing so long as we're paddling and not running the outboard.

Please share your favorite "boat dog" (or cat) photos. And take a minute to say "thanks for being my best friend".

Yep. They belong (as if a dog was a possession ) to Forum folks Howard and Donna. They visited SARAH two years ago right after we launched. In fact, they were SARAH's first four-legged guests. :) The four of them just passed through last month on their way to a second foray to the Bahamas.

But for smart dogs... Storm kept mistaking me for a boat cushion

So twenty (OK, thirty) years from now when I'm in some retirement community and they limit me to a little ball of fur - instead of the 70 lb fat-bed-hogging-pit bull that I have now - maybe a Charlie will come into my life. :)

Seriously, he looks like a pretty cool dude. And said 70-lb fat farting machine would like to go to bed now...

Good night all...

Charlie is now 17 pounds! Just right then. He was only 13 when he came into our home. Now Miso put on 4 pounds on his little frame! He's a whopping 9.9 now! :)

I never thought I would like little dogs. I always had big ones. The biggest was a Malamute/Wolf cross. I think he was around 120-130. These little guys go everywhere with me; and that is pretty cool. :) At least one of them likes the dashboard when traveling.....

BTW, Charlie is not Terrier at all, we though he was. His DNA panel states that he is Dachshund, ****z Tzu and Finnish Spitz.

Walrus?? No... it's a dog tent, as anyone can plainly see. But he lets me sleep in it, as long as I agree to feed him well and often, and take him to the lake lots :)

Actually, it's an REI dome tent purchased in the 80's and still going strong.

Nice shot Dude.

I honestly cant remember where that shot came from. I recognize the boat, the guy in the backgrounds knees, the Sound, but dont remember taking it. I have not used my old 35 in several years, but that looks like an awfully young ULA. When I still would have had it out. I'm going to ask around and find out who took that shot. It is indeed a good one. If i figure it out, I'll let you all know.

Ya David, ULA is just not down with the water at all:

Ruby is a river dogó she's been on a great many whitewater runs and lazy late-summer floats. Here she is on day 4, Desolation Canyon, Green River, Utah:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2161/3543807446_014d0ded69.jpg?v=0

We live on a river with whitewater runs above and below the house, so Ruby logs plenty of time on the water.

Hi.........I thought I would add 3 more photos of dogs that have been very much a part of my life.
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee267/Robert_Powick/Poppy1970s.jpg
Poppy belonged to my elder brother ( Terry) and was the 1st dog I shot pheasants over. She was the best dog for this you could hope for but was useless on ducks as she COULDN'T SWIM:eek:....absolute panic if out of wading depth.
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee267/Robert_Powick/Spot1980s.jpg
Spot (2nd dog) also belonged to Terry but he let me shoot with her alot on my own when he was busy working. Brilliant on both ducks and pheasants.:)

Glen was My 1st and last hunting dog. A pedigree English setter who was a very good duck and pheasant dog as well.
I lost access to many of my hunting areas in the late 80's and actually to be honest was losing interest after my brother passed away in 1984:(. I think 1989 was my last season.

Many of us have spent hours trying to explain to our wives what it means to love our boats, to appreciate the ocean, to invest in a living piece of history.

Not once have I had to explain it to my dog. He loves our boat, as deeply and joyously as I do. He loves the ocean, the beach, the storms, the flat calm days. He loves the days spent in the harbour sanding and painting, he loves the short trips to the fuel dock on a cold winters day, or the long summer slogs up to the tuna grounds off the Columbia River. He, just like me, is more at home on that boat than in the house up here on the hill.

And he feels no more need to explain this delight than I do. What a perfect companion. No wonder those of us who love a life in boats often share that life with a great dog...

Not once have I had to explain it to my dog.

What a great line, and such a truism.

Thanks.

It never hurts to bump a dog thread.

Storm kept mistaking me for a boat cushion :rolleyes:Good to see Margo! C'dog used to torment Their Canadian pooches when I spent time with Howard and Donna in NS.:)

Ruby has been good company on the water for years.

She's gone with us on week-long river trips and taken lots of day runs on our local rivers- this one's just below our house, and drops into a whitewater canyon just around the next bend.

She's also done a lot of sailing in the wee skiff, with her own spot on the port side of the daggerboard.

She's getting pretty stiff in the joints— not sure she'll be keen on boating this season. Happens to the best of us.
