From Rabl's "Boat Building In Your Own Backyard" book.

I think this is an adorable little cruiser. I might have to build one.

Save me...please... tongue.gif

Hey Roger- what's your time frame for building a bigger sailboat? I was planning to go take some photos for you of the 26' Stadel sloop that's nearby since I knew you were considering it. But, busy as things have been, I just haven't yet had the chance. So, if you have a few weeks (or months  ) before you decide, I'll still try to get them.

So, what's the particulars on Puffin? I've never seen that design. Like Dingo, I'm always interested in a new design. ;)

Hey, Matt!
The sailboat is indefinite until I make up my mind! Ha. If you happen to get some photos of the Stadel, that would be AWESOME! But by all means, don't trouble yourself or go out of your way for lil' ol' me. ;)

Puffin's a little 18' outboard cruiser with just a neat shape on the cabintop. I tried to find some images of it on Google, but nothing turned up. I'll scan the page out of the book tomorrow and post it. It's kinda reminiscent of the larger CC express cruisers, but smaller and cuter. It looks like a fun, head-turner on the bay, and the complete plans are in the book!

I got the building DT's bad, Matt. Real bad. :(

Hey, Shane!
No, that's a different Puffin, a Karl Stambaugh design. This is Sam Rabl. You're gonna think I've lost my noggin when I post the scan tomorrow, but it's so darn CUTE! smile.gif

I know the feeling, Roger. I was supposed to building one now, as my Christmas present, but sometimes patience is called for, hard as that is. :( It'll work out, though. ;)

Dingo- I think the 28' Puffin is a Karl Stambaugh design. It's a neat one, too! :D

:D Roger, it does my heart good to see someone else going through the same things I do.

I'm currently obsessing on an Edwin Monk design from his "How To Build Wooden Boats (With 16 Small Boat Designs)" book. It's a little 19' raised-deck outboard cruiser.

I've looked at and like that Puffin as well, and the interior layout is similar to the Monk above. I'm not sure I can deal with all that "roundness" though. It's just too damned cute!!! :D

Ken, yup, too darned cute, I know.

I think my gal would like it, though. smile.gif

Do you have a pic of the Monk design? I don't have that book yet.

Best,
R

Ugh! I see where it got it's name. It looks just like a Puffin's beak!

Be truthful, Don...you think it's cute, admit it! Don't try to be macho! Let your gentler, kinder self shine through! Let go your carnivorous instincts and emrace the Puffin, Don! Free yourself!

Pardon the odd scan - I'm in a bit of a hurry. But here's a quick pic of the boat.

Ok, I'm back. Mariner is fairly lightly-built, designed for an outboard motor. Batten-seam construction, 1/2" thick planking, 3/8" battens.

So many Puffins, so little time.... figgered I'd better show my face since people are talking about me. tongue.gif

Personally, I like Monk's version better of the two shown here. I've always been a sucker for the Elcos and other similar raised deck designs like that. Almost builded (as Shane sez) an Elco 26, but since it has to live on a trailer, I went for composite construction and a new design, but I sure think they're purty.

But then again, it was the Puff I'm a building now that finally captured my attention. That said, I'll show you mine if you show me yours...

Roger,

I think your Puffin is
cute , so don't pout. :D For ziggin' and zaggin' around the waters down your way, it would be a bunch of fun. Watch all that windage, trying to dock in a strong cross wind.

So many puffins, so little time.

Ken, thanks for the scans! I like it a lot. Are you gonna build her?

Still I feel so...unappreciated.

I was only half-clowning. I do like the little boat. I like Rabl's style.

Is this more to anyone's liking?

I do like the man's style! Who holds his designs?

Well, since SWMBO doesn't care to handle sails, and little SWDATA (she who demands all the attention) doesn't like "tippy" boats I may go ahead and build a power boat before I finish the Eun Mara. Besides, it's hard to sail the rivers in Pittsburgh. :D

This one is in strong contention, but there are a number of designs that I still like. Sheathed strip-plank will probably be the method, since the boat will sit on a trailer much of the time.

I like Rabl too. Puffin and the others shown above bring to mind my current restoration project, an 18ft Scottie Craft. That's a fun looking boat, Ang, and looks like a great project.

I, for one, would love to see progress pics - and I'd bet there are a bunch more people here who would, too!

Hey, Ang, I like it. Where in La. did you say you were again, the Big Easy area?
