View Full Version : I'm Banned for a Week!

James McMullen
12-18-2009, 10:41 AM
Welp, I'm banned all next week. Katie's making me go skiing in Idaho for Xmas break, so I'll not be allowed to visit the forum.

But while I'm gone, I'd like to deputize the following people to act as my proxies:

Tim Yeadon can amply serve the needs of exalting the glories of Sail & Oar cruising in small, engineless lapstrake double-enders.

Keith Wilson to compose extemporaneous doggerel with cunning wit and baroquely ornamental syllablification.

I, Rowboat to promote my godless liberal humanist atheist rational materialist agenda.

P.L. Lenihan to advise on the correct Irish Whiskey to Coffee ratio.

Thorne for counsel on black-powder musketry.

I'm still looking for someone who can post a photo of Rowan every other day even in threads where it may or may not be relevant,
and for someone to take up my crusade against hard-chines, jet-skis and Miracle-Whip. and Popeye. and Canoez.

Excellent work, Keith.
For the record, he stopped being "Jimmy" around age 4 or 5 years. I hadn't been born yet, but according to sources in-the-know he has insisted upon "James" ever since. And "Jim" doesn't cut it either, as that was Grandfather's name.

Ya know, perl, that box boat sure looks a lot more elegant to my eye than those pointy boats The Jimmy keeps bragging on.

Oar and sail be damned, give me a noisy, smoke-belching outboard any day.
Well the triloboat ( Dave Z.'s design) on top has a crab claw sail, but no oar ports and electric and gas outboards.

The other two are of course coal burners. Sweet anarchy...

you don't have to abandon the little boxes to go sail and oar...

Cant you get a bigger motor by going inboard and using a through hull shaft for the prop?

Seems like going outboard limits power, no?

If you've read your book of common prayer, you'll know that he's a very insecure fellow who demands constant praise. If you've read your book of Job, you'll know what he'll put his followers through on a dare. If you're read about the ark and about Lot's little adventure, you'll see that he's repeatedly practiced genocide. No wonder people want to appease him.

And he's the nice one.

You're saying people should give all that up, and worship nothing at a lapstrake altar?

Personally, I can see advantages to believing in God. If I could do that, I'd have someone to blame for human nature.

Yea, though I row through the harbor in the shadow of motorboats,
I will fear no evil. My Boat art Divine:
Thy curves and thy pointy ends, they comfort me.
Thou present Thine graceful lines in the presence of the Damned;
Thou annointest this boat with lissome purpose; My crab pots runneth over.

that's a chilling thought. What have all my carefully-laid plans and cunning scheming come to if life can't be a big ol' greasy burger?

When my plans for world domination come to fruition, there will be a reckoning. Oh, my, yes. Won't there just be.

Since when did calling people out on bullsh!t, even if it's crowd-pleasing (though transparent) bullsh!t, constitute intolerance? Is it intolerant to guffaw when someone tells you that they really, truly believe that Elvis is alive and that you must respect this heartfelt truth claim? Religion is like a really bad toupee. But square boats is a perl thing, so no sweat off my tucus.

Though speaking strictly as an impartial observer, I'd have to say your intolerance is something I just can't abide.

And that being the case, there's about 98% of the Forum who won't bother to take a look-see, figuring it's just another one of his rants.

So it might just be up to you and me to wail on the guy. I feel it's a public service we need to perform.

Seems to me we've done a pretty fair job chasing off his deputies, so called. I seen that Yeadon character sneaking out the back door with his tail 'treen his legs. Don't know where his Rowboat friend slunk off to. If thems the kind of people Jimmy calls friends, then I'm just sorry for the guy.

p-dawg: I can only suggest you try another medication...

"Liquid pressure builds up in the eye, pressing on the optic nerve, which links the eye to the brain. The nerve cells are slowly strangled of blood, eventually dying. The outer nerves fail first, so vision loss tends to start at the edges, progressing to "tunnel vision" and blindness. Many people don't notice this at first, and there's usually no pain, so glaucoma is often quite advanced before it's detected."

Gasped, yelled, and tore out their hair.
It's ugly, they said
And boxy, and weird,
But Bolger he just didn't care.

I helped my brother rebuild a Teal, which he then gave to me for somewhere between free and $100 (including sail). I learned how to sail with that boat, but neither of us will pretend that the boat or the design were things of beauty. It served its purpose, I learned to sail in a small boat with meager performance and have since graduated to more adult designs.
Let's not deceive ourselves: These square simple things are like training wheels for aspiring amateur boatbuilders. To pretend that they, in any way, compare to the aesthetics or performance of a real boat is like saying that it is possible to win the Tour de France on a tricycle. That's not to say you can't have fun on a tricycle, but don't delude yourself by confusing the two.

There. How was that?

And Happy Random-Arcane-Religious-Holiday-Cum-Consumerist-Extravaganza to you. Or whatever.

Saying that all cyclists are into winning the TDF is like stating that everybody is into the same kind of boating.

Or that the Tour de France winning bike can replace a working trike, pedicab, etc.

Hi guys, I'm back! What did I miss?. . . . . . .<re-read entire thread>. . . . . .oh my goodness!

Well, I must say I have never before been more delighted and appalled and thrilled and horrified all at once from the response I've seen. I truly am touched* by the fact that my simple announcement of a break ran for the entire time I was gone, for well over 200 posts, especially since I just found out from Terry that I am apparently
. . . .the bad boy of the WBF,

and that because of this role,

. . . .there's about 98% of the Forum who won't bother to take a look-see, figuring it's just another one of his rants.

Of course, after stating this, he's himself responsible for three or four dozen disturbing posts filled with innuendo and thinly veiled hostility, so hooray. . . .:(. . . . .It's just what I asked for from Santa, my very own internet stalker.

Everyone else was filled with good humor and verve. I would like to thank my noble and stalwart compatriots for their sterling service and selfless devotion to duty, with a special shout out to perldog for demonstrating the vast panoply of heinous square boats out there. Despite the 50+boats I have built--including at least a dozen flat-bottomed, hard-chined ones--and the many thousands of hours I have spent afloat, I truly never realized just how low that bar could be set.

When it really comes down to it, though, I guess I have to admit that it's really no skin off my nose if some of y'all can't tell the difference between these sorts of things. The only one you're hurting is yourself.

Delicious, curvaceous pint of delight:

Oh, and to add insult to injury, when I got back in my shop, I found this hideous thing blocking the outfeed table of my tablesaw, making me have to nudge the tablesaw over a few inches if I wanted to rip any wood longer than 18 feet. Can you believe I'm gonna have to stare at this non-plywood, soft-chined counter stern for the next several weeks while we strip it and re-plank it with a ribbon-grained sapele mahogany? There'll even be relief name-carving and gold leaf and varnish to cope with. Oh, the horror!

James McMullen

My future career as a sesquipedalian was confirmed in utero when I recapitulated my ontogeny from phylogeny twice, not merely embryologically, but also spiritually, growing from the callow moral turpitude of hard-chined obstinancy, to the shining beacon of bipolar lapstrake resplendence you know see. Alas, due to customary pediatric developmental circumstances beyond my control, my palate and larynx were not sufficiently mature to undertake the task of loquacity for several months post partum. Indeed, I was forced to remain a meagre conversationalist for nearly two of our terrestrial abode's sidereal heliocentric perambulations, and so I developed the habit which I carry to this very day of cheerfully sowing those sanguine syllables without let or hindrance in partial recompense of this sorrowful drought.

I am glad that you enjoyed it, even if it was at my expense. I've had several people PM me and say that it was one of the funniest threads they've seen in months. . .for which I really can't take any credit since I was gone for all but 0.8% of it.
And if you really have mostly exhausted your desire to strangle me, then I can't but be in favor it, despite the gratuitous amounts of Miracle Whip involved.

And I also can't help but respond with a picture of my favorite thick-shelled avatar, the late Miocene Stupendemys geographicus which spanned over two meters across the carapace. Notice the gracefully arced bottom panel without a trace of any chines until the sheerline where the deck joins.

Should I have said "sidereal and heliocentric"? I don't think they are mutually exclusive, they're additive motions.
