I just heard this on the BBC World Service. Apparently, our Predator Drones communicate in the clear  Inquiring minds want to know: what about our F-16s and the like?

[wonder if they're running Windows, too ]

Iraq rebels 'hack into US drones'

Insurgents in Iraq have hacked into live video feeds from unmanned American drone aircraft, US media reports say.

Shia fighters are said to have used off-the-shelf software programs such as SkyGrabber to capture the footage.

The hacking was possible because the remotely flown planes have an unprotected communications link.

Obtaining such video feeds could provide insurgents with information about sites the military might be planning to target.

The Associated Press news agency quotes a US Department of Defense official as saying the military has also found evidence of at least one instance where insurgents in Afghanistan monitored drone video.

The breach of the Pentagon surveillance system's security in Iraq is said to have come to light when footage shot by a Predator drone was found on the laptop of an apprehended insurgent.

A senior Pentagon official is quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying that although militants were able to view the video, there was no evidence that they were able to jam electronic signals from the aircraft or take control of them.

Well who would have thought those dumb insurgents could figure it out.

You should see what those "Dumb Insurgents" dreamed up to prevent our jamming and reception of their communications...they have some of the best minds in the business working overtime on that crap.

What is it you said in another thread Chuck? Something about not underestimating the natives?

Just because they don't live like westerners does not mean they are stupid.

What's surprising is not how smart they are but how stupid we are.

should come as no surprise. these are the folks that pulled off a co-ordinated
attack on 911, sneaking thru a trillion dollar security, aviation and military complex.
not being an electronics geek i'd think that the signals from the remote control cameras
on these planes aren't encrypted due to the need for real time viewing, i'd imagine that
there could even be a split second delay as it is and encryption of that much data might
make things a bit slower. apparently this fault in the system was known as far back as kosovo.
i recall hearing of a drone loss in either iraq or afhganistan and would hope that it self destructed.
but i'm sure someone was all over it, picking it apart, learning what they could.

.

No, these are not the same folks. Iraqi Shia insurgents and fundamentalist Sunni Al Qaeda are not the same people. Really.

um...yea...

Not too suprising the iraqis were pretty good at hiding those WMDs then. They were probably right on the verge of attacking DC and killing our president. No wonder he reacted so strongly.
