Illinois to house Gitmo Detainees at the extreemly underutilized Thompson Correctional Facility.

Let the Repub NIMBY's argue whether this move will add 2000 jobs to the area, or twenty. One thing sure, it won't increase the unemployment list by even TWO.

There are some real problems that linger from our lawless and disgusting treatment of these folk. One guy my brother has represented has been cleared of everything. From one point of view he should be released. However if he is repatriated he will be executed for their own internal reasons, nothing even remotely Taliban or anti-US. There's no place in the US that will take him. Also he has been badly traumatized by the last eight or so years and really cannot fit into anything resembling civil society of any culture without some massive support and treatment.

To all appearances, his future is just next to pointless. I have no idea as to how we get justice for these victems of our violence.

Meanwhile, Zacarias Moussaoui (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zacarias_Moussaoui) has been securely housed in a facility in Colorado for more than three years.... and no one complained about that at all.

What I have a hard time believing is that there's a prison in the US that is "under-utilized."

We still have the highest percentage of prisoners in the world. I think the number of prisoners in the US is around twice the population of Maine.

Not so hard to understan: Thompson was built by our "Nut-Case Gov. Blago", but fell victim to budget cuts.

I understand there are some prisoners incarcerated there, but not nearly as many as originally planned.

There is that bothersome bit about paying to operate them. (http://www.idoc.state.il.us/subsections/facilities/information.asp?instchoice=tom)

The minimum security unit costs $43,803.00 per inmate per year.

Couldn't we send them to Harvard for that much - retraining?

Or teach them a usable skill:

I bet that keeping the Gitmo detainees there will cost a lot more than $43,000 a year.

Just think how our relations with Cuba might improve if Obama offered to let Cuba have the base free, gratis? A US Navy Base at Gitmo may have made sense after the Spanish-American War, but in this modern age when the best weapons are often guided by an Air Force computer geek in Nevada, and Nuke Subs from New London Connecticut cruise incognito for months, who needs Gitmo?
