I am mindful of the forum rules, nevertheless some of you may appreciate at least knowing of the existence of this new book in the WB Store right now. Modesty forbids me from identifying its publisher...

Ditto, Steven.

What became of his designs - are they collected somewhere like Strange's?

He was far less prolific a designer than Strange, but a very prolific cruiser, writer and pen & ink artist. There is no single repository of his designs, but I believe one or two, including EEL, are at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, probably (as with Strange & Mystic) through his friendship with W P Stephens. As with some Strange designs, Holmes' survive mainly in printed reproductions in the Humber Yawl Club Yearbooks and Yachting Monthly (and some, via those sources, are in in the book, eg EEL, the 3 Ethels, Snippet, and others). The full-size drawings would not have offsets supplied, so probably the only gain from having them over the printed versions is greater accuracy in measuring the offsets, but I guess proper lofting would resolve all of that for practical purposes.

The book has been selling well, by my modest standard and expectation, and I just heard our hosts are reviewing it in the March April issue - out quite soon I think

I've certainly been enjoying it so far. :) Santa brought it for Christmas.

Dick,

The review is out and great. Modesty also keeps you from letting people know that the Albert Strange Society has reprinted the yearbooks of the Albert Strange society in a books on demand format. I don't remember what I paid, but the price was small, and in it you will find reprints of lots of Holmes writings for the old Humber Yawl Club.

Thanks Ben, I didn't think it would appear so soon. I stupidly let my subscription lapse, the reminder cards got buried on my desk, and I just renewed it, but I will miss this issue, hope I can get them to send me a copy, can't wait to read it myself!

Yes I produced the ASA Yearbooks (2 volumes, totalling 1000+ pages) 2 or 3 years ago, the scanner was smoking in those days. A lot of interesting stuff there (I can say that as I didn't write it!)

John Leather's two part article on Holmes's life and work in The Boatman #22-23 (March and April 1995) are also valuable references. I refer to these drawings often, mostly for the clarity of vision, but also for artistic inspiration.
