View Full Version : Advice on building thread needed

At the behest of one of the more upstanding members of this forum, the dubiously monikered Lemon Hands, and another member who's a-buildin' at the moment, WI-Tom, I am seriously considering starting a thread about the project I completed a number of years ago, Don Kurylko's beach cruiser ALASKA.
A dry treatise from a first-time builder would be tedious at best. A flippant treatment of the project would frustrate the uninitiated. Too much detail? Too little? What, in your opinion, makes an enjoyable "build" thread? (apart from a high mockery quotient which is a given with any first build, a sort of rite of passage, it seems)
All suggestions considered, eh.

Lots of pictures of pretty helpers.

Too much detail?
Its not uncommon for some folks to provide grass growing time lapse photography shots of their builds. Some even do two pages worth of opening a candian beer too. There is nothing out of the ordinarty that you can provide that has not been done. We are all normal folks here.

Just let it roll, brother. Don't overthink this.
Amen. And if there are no pictures of pretty helpers, please add one.;)

Darroch,
glad to see you're thinking about it. I can't think of anything about your build that wouldn't interest me--but then again, I'm building the same design. I look at photos of your boat all the time on Don's site...
But having seen the quality of your work, and having painstakingly cut out my permanent fancy mahogany transom to replace the temporary transom mold, complete with notches and all this fall--arrgh! there aren't supposed to BE notches, idjit!--you won't be hearing any mockery from me.

darroch, while the quotes may not be, its certainly an original idea to attempt to describe your endeavours,
only in quotes

Brilliant idea, sir...plagiary with impunity! Even as we speak I hear I Rowboat's inspirational words to OrangeAfroMan: SPREAD YOUR WINGS AND FLY!!!

The facts, ma'am, just the facts. Lots of pics with a modest amount of text would get you started in the right direction. The thread will likely take off on its own, and in its own direction. Just let it roll, brother. Don't overthink this.
...I am the current president of my chapter of Overthinkers Anonymous...and there are tons of my pics of the build on Don's site. I suspect a lot of guys on this forum could build one in their sleep. Not sure what I can add.

That's right, Terry, I'm waiting for my story, and it better be a good one. ;)

Sounds to me like what you need here is a swift kick in the tucus to snap you out of your hemming and hawing. You promised us a build thread and now you're dithering. You got some folks here waiting for the story to start up, got our hot chocolate just so, all comfy in the big couch, looking forward to a good tale. You're not going to let us down, are you?

Oh, man! Here I am asking for some action and all I'm getting is platitudes.
...I'm confused...first I get no advice...then I'm told pictures, no word thingies...then I'm told to tell a tale (and it better be good)...

OK, here's the last bit of advice I'll be offering:
Do it your own way. If you'd rather not, then don't.
...sorry, I think I was channelling OrangeAfroMan there for a second...;) I'll get right on it.

Include lots of furry helpers?
Sorry. I got nothin'. I've been worn down by OrangeAfroMan.
So help us out here, Mr. darroch. Is this your boat?

If it is you are already a better boat builder than most of us :)
...Some time later...Hey! So you've already got your building thread up and running. So why am I wasting time here?:cool:
From plenty of feedback and private messages in the past...
I think sequential photos that clearly illustrate the methodology and finished image... are much appreciated on this forum. . . see "Building Susan".

Many times I miss some parts of the actual construction, and fill in the blanks with cohesive simple descriptions... still showing as many steps and details in the sequence as I can. Think in terms of what you would like to see in a sequential illustration to follow and clearly understand the process... Segment 8 of "Building Susan" is a pretty good illustration of this...

Good god, man! That is superb! Why am I wasting time blathering on like an idiot when your thread is begging for attention. I got to page 2 of thread 1 and all the photographs were X'd out. Just when you had me there with you then poof!
Thread 8 is excellent. Please tell me the others aren't poofed as well yet.
