Well, some of you may have noticed me bragging about how nice and warm it was here while you guys were shivering in the snow.
Had a job this morning doing some dry stone terracing for a friend. I think we managed 1.5 hours before calling it quits...talk about hot! It has to be 40c+ out there! The humidity it through the roof as well.
Come on storm!

My sweetness and our son returned from a jaunt to Paraguay tuesday last.
Temps there were mostly 42 to 46 C,the last few days there temps peaked at 52C. Two days after leaving Paraguay they arrived home at -15C. This am it was -30C. Needless to say that the woodpile is taking a beating as they readjust.

temps peaked at 52C.

You would have to go to the northern parts of South Australia or the NW of Western Australia to get that here...that is seriously hot.

It's not the temp but the humidity that kills you (and the green ants).

Hottest temperature ever recorded in Oz was actually 53 C at Cloncurry, QLD. I drove from WA to Sydney in January 1982 and we had temperatures of just on 50 C right across SA. I can't believe anyone could actually survive that if they didn't have access to shade and water. I can't imagine what 52 C would be like! Rick

Rick , that 52 is easily bettered on a roof ,I saw 72 C last year on a roofing job ,tools too hot to touch ....its was only 35 in the shade .

Well no storm eventuated, very warm night. I won't be doing anymore stonework or heavy outdoor stuff till after the Wet now...unless it's very early in the morning.

I'm building pine stud frames for my shed extension, not exactly hard work but I'm still pouring with sweat.
Cloudy today so maybe there's some rain coming which would be good...I can smell smoke, there's a bushfire not too far away.

I find it's the opposite when it's really humid. Here in Hanoi, I ride my bicycle around pretty comfortably but when I stop I sort of dissolve into a pool of sweat. It's really embarrassing when I ride to a shop or cafe! Not hot here now though. December's pretty pleasant in Hanoi. In January it gets cold though - down to about 8C. That probably doesn't sound very cold to most WBFs but houses in HN have no insulation at all and usually have permanent ventilation, so heating can be a challenge.

Hope those fires stay away!
Rick

This time of year it's a good idea to do the Wet Season Shuffle...as in don't rush around because you will drown in your own sweat when you stop.

Have you seen the Too Cold to Work thread Gary? It's just amazing! I have to admit I don't really like working in 40C temperatures but I think I'd take it any day over these -30C conditions! I find I can hardly move when it gets below 10C! let alone below freezing. Rick

My friend just got back from a posting in Afghanistan. He had a picture of the thermometer showing -50C. Minus because it went all the way around past 50 + and got back to -50. Can you say HOT????

Read this at your peril , your eyes may freeze wide open...
It is 5.15 pm. The sun has set . The daytime high under a sparkling warm sun was -31C. It is now -39C and a light breeze has sprung up. By 8am tomorrow I would not be surprised to see -45C.
Absolutely bitter.... but I have fond memories of working outdoors in far worse ....
I was so much younger then, and I'm older than that now.....

I find that inconcievable Ian ...though a friend once taught in Whitehorse for a year and survived ...just .

In one of the books written by Jack London it said it was so cold that when you spit it freezes before it hits the ground like BB's !

Other interesting details of very cold weather too.

To quote Monty Python...worse, how could it be worse!?
I believe -40f is the same as -40c....it's where they both balance out.

How could it be worse you ask?
I had an interesting reply about a field call for emergency welding that went over four days in January 1995. Am temps at -58F . warming to -42F.
For some reason I couldn't load the account and I lost the story entirely.
Sufficient to say it was difficult and dangerous.....and sloooowww.
Being as shrewd as a fence post I only charged the usual rate.
AT the end of that episode I awoke the following am with dumbo ears , blisters on several fingertips, and sloughing skin on my upper cheeks. Frostbite. Lower cheeks were rosy but they were OK . Dangly bits were tested and needed some encouragement but tested reasonably well.
So there it is . If there was any doubt that I am utterly off my nut , there isn't now eh?
