Dear Forumites,
I am trying, really trying to keep Ken's Dream (TALLY HO) alive. But I have run into a minor problem that I need to ask fo help. Jenny and I tried to button up and get her ready for the winter as Ken had instructed. Well today's wind has ripped the tarps to shredes. I will get replacment tarps, but I need help in getting them in place. If anyone, within resaonable distance can give us a hand, please email me (shutchins@berrybrow.com). I'm so sorry I'm not 25 anymore and need help.

Wish I was closer Shirl. It's been a wicked windy fall, not to mention all the rain this year.

When Shirl?

I'm in southern NH quite a bit over the next couple weeks, usually Wednesdays thru Fridays. I'm working and staying in Nashua, so I can head over your way for a morning or afternoon/evening.

Sent PM to you Shirl

Call me in the AM Sat (Today) and we might be able to get it done this weekend.

Next Weekend is 29* F and snow showers all day both days . Dangerous slippery tarp conditions.

Tarps are coming in 4-5 business days, so Chase this weekend is out.
I will NOT schedule work if the weather is bad, or too dangerous.
Here are a couple of pics (front & rear of the rollup curtains/tarps that need replacing).
I've ordered an extra one to add another layer to the deck.

I made a similar roll up arrangement on my shed using Gryffolyn tarp material but added 1x3 strapping every few feet for added support. The straps attach to the shed at the ends with eye hooks to prevent blowing around.

It's not pretty but it's lasted several years now with no end in sight.

Just a thought.

Now for some decent weather.

Wish I were closer, Shirl.

Try to figure out what was chewing at the old arrangement. Does the frame have some hard spots, was the tarp too light, not enough ties, stuff like that? I've found that something with just a bit of flex, some heavy shock chord, helped on a smaller boat when I had it stored outside.

Wednesday's out for us, otherwise we're at your disposal.

A thought, looking at the pics. You've got a huge amount of unsupported tarp exposed to the wind in places. Maybe run some lines behind it. Not attached to it, behind it. Nuthin' fancy or heavy, just something to give it some support, like a bit of a web.

I'm in NH Wed-Friday next week if any of that works.

Bill, Wednesday is out. Anytime after that is OK with me.

I like that idea, Ish, about the web supporting the back of the tarp.
Those tarps held up for a good 5+years. Hope to get the same out of these.

How does Friday afternoon look? Anybody available? Shirl, does this work if we can get volunteers?

Capt'n Widda

Works fine with me Bill. Just make sure you wear your snuggies!;) It's going to be cold.
Oh, Ken attached the pieces of wood holding the tarps to the boatshed frame with phillpshead screws. I've got the batteries to his Makita drills in battery chargers, I hope they still work. Might be a good idea if you have a cordless drill to bring it along.
Thank you again so much!!!

It looks like noon-ish for a time.

Shirl has the tarps, and I'll have a ladder and truckload of tools. What we need is a few bodies.

Thanks everyone.

WBF is amazing!!

Yes it is! And I'm pretty sure double-good karma is awarded for good deeds done around Christmas, and maybe triple if it's really cold!

An hour or two in the fresh air is far better than running around the mall looking for Xmas gifts that nobody really needs. I will be along at noontime.

One change Thad, telephone number is 603-483-8238. Previous one was a FairPoint number and if you call that one they give you the WRONG forwarding number. I've tried to correct them a number of times, but the still get it wrong. And they wonder why I left!!!

Thanks Thad! I thought about finding it by memory but don't trust the grey matter anymore.

We're loaded and ready to go. Wind is laying down. We'll make short work of this and all sleep better knowing Tally Ho is sleeping well protected.

Live, Freeze or Die sounds more like it!

Kudos to the most generous guy on this forum, Bill R, for spearheading the effort yet again.

Just so you know, the Heinlen maneuver, which is what I'm calling Ish's suggestion of a supporting web structure of rope, worked flawlessly, at least in today's light air. Fingers crossed for the winter.

The woodstove is my best freind tonight.

I too, am sorry that I couldn't make it as well, work got in the way.....

Many thanks to all who came to Tally Ho's aide!!!!!

It's so absolutely awesome to me that when Shirl makes a simple request for help with Tally Ho, there's an endless abundance of folks willing to come and give their time, and support for the preservation of Ken & shirl's work. I'm so glad to have met such a amazing group of people who share the common illness.....Love of Wooden Boats.............
