What are you using for quick touch-up of dings in paint and varnish? [edited to clarify: I mostly want to know what hardware you use.....what kind of little can you keep it in]

Since my entire boat was recently refinished, I am particularly concerned about keeping the wood protected against water-stains, and maintaining the integrity of the finish itself. I've already let a couple dings in varnish go too long. I want to put a kit together now which encourages doing a quick fix when a ding occurs. The object is to do a quick repair, good enough to keep until the next real maintenance coat is applied (annually).

I remember that the Pardeys used baby-food jars (?) and tacked a cut-off art brush inside the lid....similar to a Tester's rubber cement can with brush. I'd prefer to not use glass though, and I want something that seals well. I'd want two or three of these for paint and varnish. Small. Maybe 4-ounces each maximum. Scraps of sandpaper would fill out the kit. Keep the whole mess in a little plastic dish bin or something similar in a handy locker on deck.

Ding. Quick (very) local sanding. Dab on some varnish or paint. Maybe remember to dab on a bit more later. Done.

Daly's Seafin Teak Oil. Made in Seattle. It makes a great sealer and base coat for varnish and is used as a "touch up" coat between regularly scheduled applications of varnish if needed, ie on ocean passages, etc. Its really easy to apply and maintain. I think Daly's has a website you can check out.

Thanks. I edited my question above to clarify that I am mainly interested in what kind of little can you might keep varnish in for quick fixes.....I just don't get to touching up soon enough if I have to open the varnish can and find a brush. Especially under way. Your choice of goop is good to know too though.

If the baby food jars are packed in among rags in the plastic bins there would be less problem about breakage (if that's your worry). Wouldn't you need rags in your kit box also anyway?

Canoeyawl: does nail polish work out under varnish? The container is a good option, but maybe too small for me.

RB: The rags would do it. Afixing the brush to the cap...I can't imagine a liquid-tight option. Maybe solder a flux brush to the underside.

JC: Thanks for the link. There is an option there for a 4-ounce alluminum can with brush-in-lid. Cheap. Here's the link.
