Check out today's (Nov.22) N.Y. Times story about Paul Gartside and Bess Rattray's wedding. (I confess my wife saw it first.) Pg.12, Sunday Styles.

"The couple met in August 2005 at the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Me. Ms. Rattay was taking a sailing class there while writing an article for Vogue. She was not allowed to sail solo until she finished the course."

" 'I would loiter around the dock for someone who was qualified to take a boat out,' Ms. Rattay said."

"Along came Mr Gartside, who was teaching a course in boat design. She asked if she could accompany him."

Nice story, and congratulations to the bride and groom.

I'd marry him just for his small cruising sailboat designs :D.

This could be a plus for us. The bride is a writer, the groom knows a thing or two about boat design, building and sailing.
Maybe we'll get some good books on the market again. Nothing much has come out since Roger Taylor left International Marine. (Anyone know what Mr. Taylor is doing these days?)

Living on a houseboat on a canal in France, working on his biography of L. F. Herreshoff.

Ah yes....while Mrs Gartside was in Sidney awaiting the return of her handsome sailor. They divorced soon after, sold their water front house in North Sannich, and off across the country he trekked....to leave it all behind
Congrats to you both!http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Paul Gartside is a wonderful guy. I wish him every happiness in his marriage and hope it leads to even greater inspiration in his wonderful designs.

Well, I think I'm with Riveter on this one. (I like Paul's designs though -- although for the life of me I could never work out why he'd put a galley to starboard.)

Well, I think I'm with Riveter on this one. . .

Me, too.

Barbara (Paul's previous wife) was once a regular contributor here. I came to have a very good opinion of her, both from her posts here and a couple of emails exchanged.

Until now, I had no idea that she had not moved with him to Canada's east coast. I'm sorry to hear that their marriage ended in divorce.

Best wishes, Barbara.

Good on you, Wayne -- my thoughts exactly. Barbara and I used to correspond from time to time too, and I found her a very warm, thoughtful person.

But life goes on doesn't it? I hope the worst of it is over for her now (as it clearly seems to be for Paul....)

Best wishes, BarbB.

Yes, Barbara is a class act. Her contributions here were always positive and thoughtful. She's missed by those who remember her.
I guess this explains the move to the East.
Talk about mixed feelings....

I never try to second guess the feeling between related people.

I think you're quite right not to, Andrew. And I think that's why the rest of us were empathising rather than criticising.

So, Ed,
Are we talking about the general bad tempered craziness in the bilge, or some particular rant about Barbara or her ex?
I looked but found nothing about the recent mate swap news, although I admit not spending time down there.

I'm looking forward to working with Mr. Gartside on the developments of plans for Sjogin. (http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?t=114023)

Ah so.
Thanks Ed.

From what I've seen, Paul's designs and built boats are most excellent, Russ. No doubt his plans for Sjogin will be too.
His family business is his own, of course, and no one else's..
But, I do hope Barbara has better fortune next time.
