New guy here. Been lurking for about a year, trying to decide what to build first. Then fell onto an unfinished Garvey 19 headed for the chainsaw! So here I am......... . Does anyone know anything concerning this model? The original builder gave me all the plans and some pics of the build thus far, but I see no info as to what size motor she would need. The well is sized for a short shaft. I am thinking about 50 hp. Does this seem right? He had the hull already glassed and faired pretty good, however he had antifouled below the waterline over the primer I assume. I suppose that this will need to be sanded off prior to painting? Also, please tell me, does topside paint work below the waterline on a trailered boat? Thanks for any response to the first of a myriad of questions, i am sure. =)

I'd say that 25hp would be the minimum to move that boat. 50 should be plenty of power. Personally, I'd modify the transom to take a long shaft for rough water use.
You say he "antifouled" it, and should you sand it off? I don't know what you mean - if it has anti-fouling paint now, why would you "sand it off"?
As for topside paint on a trailered boat, if you're satisfied with the final fairing and sanding any quality alkyd enamel should be fine. I like Sherwin Williams.
