Hello Folks,
I'm lurking some time around in this wonderfull forum. I live with my family in the Hampton roads area. Last year I built a Hiawatha 14 canoe after the plans from bateau.com. It worked fine and I like the result very much. Unfortunately I had some left over plywood from the project and there is not enough room for my wife, three kids and me.
Therefore I desided to start the next project to get ride of the leftover plywood and to have one more seat.
This time I'm building a skin-on frame Kayak.
Greetings

Looking good! Are you building from plans?
Canoe looks nice, too.
Good luck!

Thanks,
yes I'm building the kayak from a plan from Clark Kraft.
In the moment I'm not sure what skin to use canvas or more modern stuff like ceconite 101 . I saw pretty interesting report under this link:
http://people.brunel.ac.uk/~acsrrrm/kayak/pbk/pbk27/pbk_27.html (http://people.brunel.ac.uk/%7Eacsrrrm/kayak/pbk/pbk27/pbk_27.html)
Does anybody has already used the ceconite for a skin-on-frame kayak/ canoe?

I'd skip canvas - very hard and painful to sew, and prone to rot. Nylon or polyester are my fabrics of choice, with poly being the one I prefer these days. Hit up the famous George Dyson for his list of fabrics he sells specifically for covering SOF boats. GDyson@gmail.com
There's a good overview of skinning and coating options in the latest Masik online magazine. Check it out here, starting aroung p41. http://www.qajaqusa.org/QUSA/newsletter.html
Edited to say that: Ceconite is a type of Dacron - which is a polyester fabric. I use the 8oz polyester from Mr. Dyson, and I can use heat (very carefully applied) to shrink out any wrinkles that may develop when skinning the boat - that's why I like it.

What is the estimated final weight of the boat you're building?

I'm not sure, but tomorrow I can put on a scale. A rough estimate is about 10 pounds.

10 pounds might be a little bit to optimistic. I will put it on scale tomorrow.

It's a 13 ft. x 26 in. Percy Blandford design. The plan offering claims the finished weight should be 26 lb.

O.K. the 10 pounds were really to optimistic. I put it on a scale and its weight is 21 pound without the skin. Here a few pics with the decks.
