Mary Bauer and I just confirmed the 3rd week in August. Begining August 15th or so.
Captain Vinnie suggested we extend the cruise to 2-3 weeks so this 3rd week ought to be in the middle for planning if anybody has just a week.
Mary and I nominated and elected Steven as this year's Commodore. She says, "He's sleeping right now. When he wakes up I'll call him Commodore."
Good start.
There are a couple threads out there with pictures from this past summer.
There is also a Facebook Group Page.

Welfare Fleet Preamble off the Facebook page:
The Welfare Fleet is a Yacht Club. The club has an open membership. Boat owning members are those who would not likely be members of traditional yacht clubs and manage to maintain and keep their boats sometimes on shoestring budgets (hence the "Welfare"). Anybody is welcome to join as a Club member to support the cruise as crew or vessel owner of any type or size.
The Club is loosely organized to support an annual August cruise, mid-coast Maine.

Sorry to report that we'll probably be going on our triennial visit to the UK in August. So, as far as cruising goes, I'm waiting for 2011, but hope there'll be other opportunities to meet with you guys during the year.

Oh man, you take a little nap after roofing all day and next thing you know you're the Commodore!
I think the thing for us to do next year is sail up to So. Bristol the weekend before then we can get an earlier start.

Good to hear from you Chris, and we welcome the new Commodore. Steven this is one reason I don't take naps any more life can change in the blink.... Oh well we need to have an EBS. Steven,Mary and I met up at Hamiltons today, and possibly the Bauer's will host it soon. Look forward to the planning process, which by the way was very simple!!!

Cripes, boys and girls. I was at the house most of the day. What am I, 300 yards from Hamilton's Bank?
Steven, take a look in at the downstairs make-over when you're in the neighborhood next time.

I hope to be able to join you next summer. Tortuga may be a bit rough around the edges in August, but she should be floating then - fingers crossed. How does one join?

Meaning to me we shall have to recruit the other Hudson River documentarian for 2010. Thanks again to you Howard for your efforts last year. I showed a friend the collection and he was tickled by the quality as I am each time I open my computers.

Dan,
If you intend to venture forth again, I've just come across an old magazine article about how to make a canvas sling berth (like a Root berth) for a 19 foot open sailboat like your Lightning. Say the word.

Since his Canoeyawl is in California I thought he might be bringing something else. Unless he has two of them....

I have two of them...LOL :o
This one is a family affair, I picked it up in San Francisco Bay basically abandoned, half sunk and bought it back home about ten years ago. So it's a legitimate candidate for the Welfare Fleet. I have added some paint and new sails (and weeks - and weeks of work-lol)
No engine so we spend much time drifting around Penobscot bay, but I can't think of anything else I would rather do most of the time!

Another Sailor without an engine!! Excellent!!
Re: Canvas Pipe Berth. I found the problem with my bunk was the assembly and disassembly. I don't think the pipe berth would help. But I'd be willing to look.

Just talked to Steve & Mary and it looks like we were not quite on the same page for dates. The Bauer's (as in the Commodore) will be cruising begining the week of August 15th.
I had in mind for the next week so I will look for adjustments.
Vinny&Shawn
05-06-2010, 07:21 PM
We are OK for those dates, 15 > 23 , was that not similar to last year, kids go back to school soon after, makes for an easy adjustment. Some can also sail a few days extra I suppose?

I will miss the WF Cruise-O-Rama this summer while sailing further Downeast with a friend as long as we can get the lead keel repaired sufficiently. No clue what's going on here on this trailing edge. It deteriorated while the boat was on the hard. The missing lead leaves a 16" hole there.
Really shoddy lead casting perhaps?

I'm just not going to be able to make it this year. Too busy at home to do it, and I really want a better suited boat, which I'm not going to get this year.

If I say we'd like to come, but if we don't make it, then that's the way it might turn out. As is, I'm darned close to launching for the season on our VT lake mooring--battery box needs a cover, trailer needs the once over with a grease gun, a few slaps of Cetol here and there. It'd be great to see our boat on salty waters, sailing with others. May we sign up and get our hearts ticking to the upbeat?

We're psyched, hoping to make it. Thanks for counting us in. Just, today, launched in VT lake, feeling like summer has arrived (which in fact is what it did today).
I recall conversing with someone "organizational" from last year Welfare Fleet's adventure about trailer and pickup storage, ramps, etc. In time this sort of info great to get.

Well BillyBudd has told me he can't make it this year. I just talked to Vinny and they are in. Talisman is in and ready to go. That's two definite. How is it looking Jake? And Steve? Will you be at the Small Reach Regatta next week? We can talk there. Stefan, are you still thinking about joining in?
What do you guys think about meeting here Sunday the 8th to talk things over? Mary is off work on Friday so I think we'll head North, fog permitting, early on the 13th. Good thing we aren't superstitious. Starting a voyage on a Friday and the 13th to boot.
If all goes well we could be in Boothbay Friday night and we'd head East with Vinny and Shawn Saturday morning. Others could meet us there or join in as we travel along. It was awesome last year to meet the others as they were rounding Pemaquid Point.
So what do you say folks? Who can make it?
Here is a pic of Talisman on her mooring I took last night. Does she look ready to go or what?

We are keeping the 8th open for a get together, keep us posted. Plan on going up to Boothbay on the 13th and spend a day getting ready. While waiting for Steven and Mary to sail along. Might get out to meet them. Get an early start and we'll hope for the good weather!!

Just a few days left now. We bought our food for the trip last night. I think the weather will hold, though there was a big fogbank off Portland yesterday afternoon. If anyone else is thinking of joining in just give us a shout. We should exchange cell phone numbers before Thursday night.

We are tying up loose ends and are leaving for Boothbay Thurs. morning. I have to stop in Cumberland and move a grand piano within a household, then we are off to Harpswell to drop off our 15 yr old at grandparents. While there we will meet with our excavation contractor, who will be de-stumping our building lot,as we need to go over a plan. Then off to Boothbay to provision and get ready to meet up with Steven and Mary.We will talk to you two by Thurs. Weather is looking OK.

The Welfare fleet is anchored in Long Cove, Tenants Harbor tonight... probably about as far down east as they will go.
The plan is to head back towards Portland at an easy pace.
I had a lovely dinner with them all and may have the award for the smallest boat in the fleet at 11 feet!

Thanks for posting the cell phone pics, Joe. The trip was lots of fun! We're home now, we were very lucky with the wind changing like it did to give us some fantastic sailing on the way back to Portland. I'll have lots of pics and videos soon, along with some commentary. And I want to say thanks to Vinny and Shawn. What great cruising buddies.
