The wind blew, trees swayed, rain pelted the windows.

there was some slight shuttering of the slate roof ... in an area that had worked itself loose ... not a good feeling ...

The sky was so black she saw nothing but the reflection of her candle as she peered through the window into the distance.

A hound was heard baying at the occluded full moon from a distant moor.

A dark object fluttered at the window.
John Mellencamp Grandma's Theme
Was a dark stormy night
As the train rattled on
All the passengers had gone to bed
Except a young man with a baby in his arms
Who sat there with a bowed-down head
The innocent one began crying just then
As though its poor heart would break
One angry man said, "Make that child stop its noise
For it's keeping all of us awake."

The original, from the master himself:
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness. You can read the whole thing here. Up to the door ran a disheveled logger dragging a smoking chainsaw. He'd had to cut trees to clear the roadway all the way from Mt. Hebo... where the winds were gusting up to 95 mph.
In a raspy voice, he asked to borrow some chain oil, and inquired if she might have some smoked salmon and a beer to share.

Above the barn, a pale sliver of new moon creased the dawn, a thin white scar on the pallid face of a new day.
Fast moving clouds scudded across her brain as she realized she was seeing an eclipse in reverse. A shrill shriek split the air!

In a raspy voice, he asked to borrow some chain oil, and inquired if she might have some smoked salmon and a beer to share.
Without hesitation she tossed him a Black Butte Porter (TM) from the cooler, the ice water clinging to the bottle continuing it's trajectory as the bottle slapped to an abrupt halt in his hand. He popped the top as she removed the rifle vise from the table and replaced it with a sharpening jig. "Salmon's in the fridge. Set that saw down. Looks like it needs a touch-up along with the oil." She clamped the saw in place, then cocked her head sharply to one side and a cascade of neck cracks could be heard, then righting her head, she started in on the saw.

Pour rum over ice, then add ginger beer, then lime juice. I prefer real lime juice rather than that Rose's HFCS crap.
