much like the scottish rowing project with the st ayles skiff, i have been considering a row boat for the fingerlakes of ny state. have decided to build a whaleboat modeled on the beetle boat in ansel's book. lofting is done and keel elements for lapstrake epoxy are complete. i am hoping other communities in the fingerlakes (or any other bodies of water) will be interested and perhaps build their own. i'm estimating the cost of the the hull to be around $3000. in addition to community building, recreational rowing and a sailing (ketch rig), we can also hunt jet skis and drain their oil.

anybody interested?

Consider the boats built by The Atlantic Challenge. They've been around for a while and it's an organization than can help support you: http://www.atlanticchallenge.org/

these are beautiful but unfortunately too big for my shop. plus i think the whaleboat has a certain mystique that strikes fear into the heart of 2 cycle engines

Another option are Scilly Isles/ Cornish gigs of which there are now many in New England, used in all sorts of programs. Lake Champlain Maritime Museum has built a bunch.

On a much less expensive more modest scale are the 4 oared Floating the Apple gigs; again a goodly number of them have been built and they are not costly.

and yet, the whaleboat it will be. the rig is similar to the tern but sprit sails with a loose footed main; frames and keel in black locust , marine ply planks. will post progress under "keuka whalers"

I thought you were talking about another Community Rowing (http://www.usrowing.org/News_Media/PressReleases/detail.aspx?nws_lKey=772)
