I do not intend this topic to be a sales pitch so if it comes off in such a way Scot can scratch it.......
I have a new boat on the drawing board...a sorta sretched Tana Mari. It will be built in the old yard where my last boat was built. We will start ordering materials for the hull in about 4 months...and the interior stuff in about 8-12 months...
The interior is ash ceilings and the bulkheads and majority of the furniture will be plywood with a Russian Ash veneer. Russian Ash has a more pronounced and darker grain than American Ash. It will be plane sawn and rolled in 3/32 inch thicknesses. It comes by way of the U.K. but is cheaper to send it directly to the yard.
The interior trim and solid furniture that might be Teak or Mahogany in most other boats will be Indian Rosewood. I can purchase Indian Rosewood cheaper than I can buy cheap pine construction stock in the U.S.
The last time I did this I purchased a load of it, unfinished planks about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick, made large crates from it, and shipped some ceramic elephants (about 100 bucks and 30 pounds) ocean freight. It took 3 months to get it but it worked out to a buck and a half a board foot. This is not a commercial enterprise...but an economical way if someone wants to tag on to an order for some nice wood for interior finishes for your boat or maybe some custom furniture. The only way to get this stuff in a reasonable quantity is as unfinished crates or finished product for export.......This ...I swear to God...is my last big boat project...my final retirement toy, so if anyone is interested contact me by e mail....
