In '94 we went to Maine for the WoodenBoat show, and somewhere along the line I wound up at Hamilton Marine. I figured I could finally get some real red lead primer there. He told me that because of the lead ban, the replacement was Petit's Tie Coat Primer. So I left disappointed with a gallon of this stuff instead of the red lead. It's Xylol based, and seems a little hard for a wood boat. What's this stuff really used for?

(btw, I discovered Kirby's and now have the real red lead in hand.)

Xylene is a solvent component, and might be as little as five percent. Federal laws require a manufacturer inform you if it's got more than five percent of xylene or toluene or red fuming nitroprussides of plutonium.

Get the MSDS and see what they say. It is not likely to be informative.

Assume it is another oil-base "primer. Paint a coat on a Ziplock bag, let it cure a few days, peel off the film and evaluate its flexibility, and decide for what it might be useful.
