Hi folks,
I'm going to try to repair a wooden canoe for a friend, but first I'd like to know if there is anything unique about it. It has a hole from being dropped, and some old sloppy repairs but no rot; my efforts will (hopefully) save this nice little boat from the burn pile.
It has a plaque on it that reads: 'Dundee Boats, Thompson & Kellogg, No 30'.
I found a little about Dundee Boats with a google search, but not much. Apparently they made small power boats sold mostly on the east coast, but I found no references about them building canoes.
The construction is molded plywood, it's just over 16' long.
My questions:
When might it have been built? Likely range is 1945-1962, I think.
How many might have been made?
Is the No 30 a series number or just a model number?
Where can I find more information about fixing a hole in the plywood?
Does anyone else have one of these?
Does anyone have a more detailed history about the company?
Might there be any historical significance to this boat I should be aware of before I commence to hacking away?

Thanks much, any help is appreciated,
Ken S

I'm not familiar with them, but suggest that you post the same question over on the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association forum. If anybody on the net has historical info on them, that's probably the place to find it.

The Dundee boat company was located in Dundee, N.Y., a small village located between Seneca and Keuka lakes in the Finger Lakes area of New York state. You can view a short history of the Dundee Boat Company on the following site:

You may be able to get some additional information on Dundee Boats by emailing the Finger Lakes Boating Museum at:

Does that mean hot-molded? I'm at work, so I can't see any picture you may have included.

PS--is that aqua-hulled boat a Penn-Yan cartopper? My grandfather had one--lots of good times in that boat.

Yes, that aqua-hulled boat is a Penn Yan cartop model. I have one, a 1947, 14 footer, hanging off the rafters in my garage. Maybe someday I'll get to it, but I just got my Swift finished so I'll have to save up some dollar$ once again.
