View Full Version : Moving main electrical panel

A new subject not really related to wood, but does relate to my 1949 vintage sloop.

I need to move the electrical panel, which was placed inconveniently in its location by a prior owner; unfortunately, of course, the wires going from the the load side are not going, in most cases to be long enough to get to the new location. Is it sufficient and safe to put a couple of largish terminal block in the current location, protect them with a cover and then continue on to the panel in its new location?

If you don't intend to move it too far.....several feet of small wire can cause loss of voltage due to wire resistance. A very few feet of the same size wire or slightly larger will work well...but under no circumstances use smaller wire. Also make sure the terminal ends are done properly. As much energy is lost through a poor crimp connection as a few feet of wire.

I'd go same or one step up in wire size; we're talking about 2 feet. I've always sized wire to meet no more than 3% voltage drop.

Thanks.... (I think I accidentally put this in the wrong area).

Would it be a good idea on any short, heavily loaded circuits to just do some quick math to make sure the added distance is not pushing up the voltage drop to an unacceptable level?

of course i'll check loads/wire gauge; i don't have any really heavy circuits and in fact have few anyway. this is a simple boat, at least from a power-use standpoint...!
