Tampa Fire Rescue's largest boat ran ashore on Vilano Beach late Wednesday, and crews worked Thursday to get it back on the water.

Bill Wade, Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman, said he and a crew of six were sailing the 69-foot vessel Patriot to Tampa from Canada, where it was being built for the last five years. They planned to dock at a St. Augustine marina for the night. But at about 11 p.m. they hit ground while navigating through the channel near Porpoise Point, Wade said.

"We like St. Augustine so much we decided to stay here," he said with a laugh.

Clearly on land, Wade said the boat's GPS unit showed that it was actually in the middle of the channel.
No one was injured, and the boat was not damaged when it grounded, said Joy Hill, a spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The tugboat Albert Pike pulled the Fire Rescue vessel off the shore about 1 p.m. Thursday.

Mark Gibbs, U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant commander, and several other Coast Guard officers oversaw the process, in part to ensure it did not impact the environment.

Wade said the boat is Tampa Fire Rescue's largest and can pump the same amount of water as 10 fire trucks.

It was built in Ontario, and the crew departed on Sept. 11 to bring it to Florida.

"If this is the worst thing that happens in its lifetime that's not too bad," Wade said.

Record reporter Chad Smith contributed to this report.

No, that is the competitor's fireboat. Woudn't have run aground if we had built it... <wink, grin>

My guess is cleaning their pants just before they started the job search process. ;)

That close to shore they should have been using P&G navigation.

Was having a discussion like this with my doctor at the hospital after surgery.....he stated that he used his GPS at night coming and going from Annapolis, I asked if he set the waypoints from the charts or at the actual gps points while under sail...he replied that he used the charts........I told him he was practicing running aground so don't be surprised when it happens......for a doctor he seemed a bit dense, until I asked him would he operate on someones arteries using a map made by a drunk or something made by an MRI....he started to get the picture.
Especially when he set the waypoints using the drunks drawings.

That's why I love this set up on our workboats...

Having been in that water around St Augustine, I can tell you it ain't that hard to run aground. It looks really really wide. It is however in places really really shallow. I'll dispense with the details.

On the Georgia coast my GPS routinely shows me running through the high ground of the marsh when I'm in fact in mid channel . The electronic chart is based on the NOAA chart I think . I bought the USG topographic map for one such area to see if I could get better info. Here I found the problem .The last survey of that backwater was done in 1935 ,and the marsh moves around a bit over time .Once you leave the ICW the charts ,both paper and electronic, are based on very old data ,at least in my area .This was less obvious before we had GPS .

A few months back we were having breakfast at a cafe on Flinders Parade at Sandgate. One of the party had GPS on his Iphone which gave our location about 1km into Moreton Bay.

Are you sure it was using GPS? Even on an iPhone or itouch without GPS they have location tracking which employs a combination of Wi-Fi, cellular. Even if it does have GPS if you are inside and the signal is week it may use cellular triangulation to figure out where it thinks you are. My iPhone is an older model without GPS. When it can see multiple towers it can be freaky accurate for land navigation even without GPS. When it can only see one tower like at home it usually puts me in the middle of Puget sound or as of right now it thinks I am in a tree over near Freeland on Whidbey Island.

My Garmin 60C GPS routinely shows my car parked in Clinton Lake, Illinois all the while I'm sailing in the trees on the other side of the lake. :) :)

Just checked my iPhone. Shows me about 60' to the NW. At least it's on dry land....

Looking at Portland's now wrecked fireboat it just amazes me the designer never accounted for shallow water strikes. They might as well have stuck all the equipment in an old Cris Craft Constellation hull for all the money they spent. What were they thinking?
