I'm going to check out a 1958 Thompson Lapstrake 16 ft boat Sunday. The ad says sound but needs re-finish...we'll see. $200.00 takes it.
Off to buy a REALLY bright flashlight, awl and sharpen my pocket knife.
Here is a site offering another one for sale (sold it says) so y'all can see what it looks like.

Doing some research on the boat comes up with this:

Now I am really interested...I hope it is even close to the condition as stated. It might be the "find" of a lifetime.

Well...I dooed it. It is in about 90% of the as stated condition...still an excellent bargain. There is some separation of the bottom and the transom but no apparent rot, and some delamination on the upper cross pieces behind the back seat tops I thing someone fiberglassed near the keel...I can see cloth and it doesn't look like a professional job. I will need to remove a few layers of paint before I can thoroughly assess it but there is no through rot or any rot on the interior floorboards, around any of the frames or anywhere else I can see. It has a crappy aluminum and Plexiglas windshield with a crack in it which will get replace with a wood and glass one as the restoration/refinish goes apace. This will probably be a couple of year project real time although it really only needs around 50-75 man hours of actual work...as far as I can see.
I will post pictures as soon as my son emails them to me from his camera. I also have pictures of a small Dink that the guy I got the boat from has...made by the Howard Hughes corporation. It is of molded (hot or cold don't know) construction...small (about 6 1/2 ft x3 ft ) and really cute. Called a sportster or sporter or something along those lines.

Good luck! I found my 1959 PennYan sitting in a field in Vermont a few years ago Spent 2 years rebuilding her (an hour here, an hour there). Give those ribs a good poke; I had to sister all mine except up by the bow. They can look good on the outside, but be totally rotted out underneath. That dink, given it's age, has to be hot molded. Had a Highlander Class 20' sloop years ago with that construction. Held up very well.

The top pieces between the two seats, where they slope to the gunnel is where the delamination is. I'll get some more pics when I can crank my son out of bed. I misplaced my camera in the move so I am using his BBerry for the pictures.

As you can see in this last pic...the varnish is peeling quite badly on the floorboards/sole. The frames and stringers all seem to be in good shape though...plenty of resistance to my awl when I poked and prodded. The boat has been in dry indoor storage for like the past 10 years and only saw outside for the past couple of months.

So you got it? color me jealous, I have been watching for a deal like that religiously for awhile now. Please post progress as you go, I am supposed to look at an offshore that needs work in a couple weeks. 22' boat is quite a project though.
www.thompsondockside.com if your not familiar with it.
Will that boat seat 6? or is it too small? How wide is it? sorry for all the questions but I have only seen the offshore 20 in person.
