"The "Fruitful Vine" being fitted out at Macduff Slipway. Once she is sea worthy she will be registered as BF 240."

Anyone know what's the idea behind the design of these Banff Trawlers?

The reason is that there are a lot of regulations and restrictions that apply to fishing vessels of more than 24m length - which are worth while avoiding.

That encourages the designers to offer vessels which maximise the VOLUME while still being under the length limit.

This is a very good example of well intended regulations having unintended (although very foreseable in this case) consequences.

It is a great shame, since previous legislation governing fishing vessels and their crew certification used to be based on boat volume. That allowed the naval architects to reach their client's limit while still offering good hull proportions.

Up until the late 1950s, the average Scottish motor fishing vessel was a rather slender (relatively speaking) vessel, with strong links to its sailing roots.

If you want to see something really ugly - look for an under 16m steel trawler. Their L/B ratio and underwater form is so skewed that they pitch rather than roll when lying beam on to the "wrong" waves. Nodding donkeys.

i guess a kort nozzle round the prop, up to 30 % more efficient at slower speeds, & the bulb bow is more aerodynamic, & ali shelterdecks, a very efficient machine, mcduffs are specialists, also napiers, arbroath

This topic was covered earlier when a similar boat was brought up for discussion. Interesting how laws influence boat design, innit? That's how tumblehome and some other unique design elements became so pervasive.

My guess is that those guys, coming off a really bad crack high, designed this:

The draft on that boat is 16 feet with a big lead bulb at the bottom of the keel. :D

Too bad we won't be able to watch when she tries to surf down the face of a wave like the special effects folks depicted in The Perfect Storm, eh?

One wonders if it isn't water ballasted to get it down to it's lines then gradually pumped out as the holds fill up. It looks like a beach ball as it stands.
