View Full Version : Wooden Dragon on Oz Ebay
Call me a fool but if I wasn't already into a restoration project I think I'd jump at this one and I'm still tempted (what does a divorce cost these days?):

It's a wooden Dragon from the 1950s, probably needs heaps of work but it's nearly all there and what a boat! Rick

Struth, what a find. Wonder where that's been hiding. I won't tell if we get to sail her in a year or two. Surely she'll go for more than that, with the history and all, early days yet
Sounds like it's changed hands a few times recently. Rick

You know you want it.:D
Screw the voice of reason- I'll do you a trade;)
I'll tell you this is a great idea, and then you tell me that I should indeed be trying to find a nice old BMW airhead to park in the shed (as I am trying to do).
It is a great idea, Ian.

I've found an even better proposition: A Daydream (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Yacht-Day-Dream-Sloop-29ft-timber-yanma-diesel_W0QQitemZ230380062206QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_ Boats?hash=item35a3b8c5fe&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) for a smidgen over $200!!! The first Daydream, launched in 1955, sailed from Sydney to NZ then competed in the Auckland to Suva race.
Bargains abound!!!
There is another Dragon in SE Qld undergoing restoration

Hmmm, Pinjarra hills - reasonably close, you're not the only one tempted Ian, if it wasn't for a H28 in bits and a Hartley needing attention............?? (oh and no current income kinda contributes...)

It would indeed be a great project for someone who was in no hurry to actually go sailing, but there is also a nice looking, sailable for the same sort of money ....

I never thought of a Flying Dutchman as slow.... but relative to a Tornado it could be a little sedate I guess.
Dragons. That's an unusual accountant - mine always tells me in detail how much my vices are costing me.
Max bid for you? Given transport costs from Qld, that there is no rig and there are a number of sailable Dragons for sale here (http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/boats-for-sale/details.aspx?R=3082454) , here (http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=6839304) and here (http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=6839304) for a lot less than what you would sink into it, I reckon it should at most be free.
Based on my experience with my 22 sq metre and friends' experience with Dragons, there will be a lot of structural work to be done around the mast-step area, frames, floors, planks the lot. It will cost you tens of thousands to get in the water based on the standards you're applying to Yellowtail.
But if you really must, bid very very late, and bid low. There is stilll no bids and I bet there are none at close. Then offer a small amount.

Chris , those boats you presented are very cheap compared to the potential cost of the Ebay project and they're sailing NOW !

Ian, if you are serious, don't rush into getting it shipped. There's room to store it up here for a bit and if the trailer is in decent condition it may be something to think about flying up and doing a vehicle relocation through that mob I used if there's one with a towbar and there's also always a chance of either myself or my mate with the movie vehicles taking a motor home or truck to Sydney over the next few months.
Larks
09-25-2009, 04:52 AM
Yeah, typically I went back and read the details of the trailer properly after opening my gob (or banging my fingers on the keyboard in this case), but that's just me and a Friday arvo beer. It'd be interesting to see how the length compares to my mates vehicle trailer which is a decent size, but probably too long in the overhangs to be realistic.
Larks
09-25-2009, 05:46 AM
I can't see any problem with shifting her a short distance from where she is, a couple of tyres and a permit for the trailer should be easy to come by, I was thinking more of the longer trip to Sydney.

I've sailed a 23 foot version of this boat , a mate built her as an apprentice and sailed her as far as the Solomons .As very good design .The one above is the 26 footer .Really ,an Australian version of a Vertue .

I paid $2500 US for my boat, with a road-worthy trailer (needed tires) and an aluminum rig. She was about in that same condition, though we did not replace the deadwood. There are lots of good wooden boats out there for sale at nice prices, but I have to admit that I take a lot of pride to know that if I hadn't come along my boat would probably be nothing but some ashes and a melted-down ballast keel by now. At least I saved her for one more generation.

Congrats Ian, a bargain I reckon. Quite a fleet you are assembling mate. Oh for a deeper water anchorage. She should come up a treat. In 1956 I was in the Sea Scouts and 'worked' at the sailing venue on Port Phillip. I even met Uffa Fox, but he made no impression at the time on a 13 year old boy.
This weekend the shallow 'anchorage' near where we are building has been subject to steadsy 60kt onshore windsgusting to nearly 100kt. No place for a boat to be moored.

Duncan Gibbs
09-28-2009, 04:44 AM
Plus I have a well located central bush television that one only needs to fine tune the reception on every so often! After the snags have been blackened of course! :D
I'll call Ian and work out a date!
So, Ian bought the Dragon did he? Good on him, although I'm a bit jealous! I saw an article in Classic Boat a year or three ago about strengthening the bow of timber Dragons. Apparently they have a tendency to sag. The article talked about how restorers have installed a criss-cross frame/truss arrangement. Classic Boat is usually pretty soft on technical detail so it may not have been CB but I think it was.
People have talked about how it will cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix this boat. I can't see how it could unless you paid a yard to do it. There's just not that much to a Dragon and nearly all of it's already there! I think it'll be a really nice project. Rick

Righto! Just spoke to Ian and it's either the weekend of the 12th/13th or the the weekend of the 26th/27th depending on the availability of a second axle on his trailer.
PeterSibley
09-28-2009, 05:05 AM
You're right , she looks a simple hull, no interior fit out ,but knowing Ian he will get pretty excited about the rig .
BTW, Classic Boat is definitely soft on detail !

09-28-2009, 08:45 AM
If you pay someone $60-100 per hour of course it will cost a lot of money. Restored by the owner? You won't really get into the big money until you begin fitting it out.
One thing that always surprises new owners is how much their line package winds up costing. Line is pretty pricey, and there are a lot of adjustments on a Dragon.
