As per dmede's suggestion.
I've got a Uniden handheld Vhf. Nice radio, waterproof etc. Maybe twelve years old. The batteries are getting tired. I've seen battery rebuilding services advertised. Worthwhile? Or toss it? Any suggestions of a good company?

Batteries Plus (http://www.batteriesplus.com/ -- there's a store in Bangor) rebuilds batteries. They did a great job on the batteries for my Fein drill (something like $25 per battery). Turnaround was about 2 days.
They also sell batteries as well. They might have replacements for your VHF.

Naw....it's beyond repair...send it to me and I'll use it for parts.
If you can use a soldering iron, the cells are available from batteryspace.com for reasonable fees. The build all my battery systems to order.

The build all my battery systems to order. That is the dirty secret with most of the rechargable tools and widgets. Once you get the battery pack open, you usually find an array of standard-size cells soldered together.
Oh...one thing about the rebuild Batteries Plus did on my Fein drill's batteries. The milliamp-hour rating went up by something like 50 or 75 percent. More mA-Hr = more screws driven per charge.

Most of the small cells that you find inside are either AA's or AAA's....
The standard AA's used in most devices use the less expensive 700 mah cells. You can get better ones at 900 mah for 20 cents more each, and for 35 cents more you can get 1000 mah cells. Fifty percent more power for 35 cents per cell.

I suppose you mean AAA cells. AA cells are more like 2000-2500mAh these days

Thanks guys. I called the company Nicholas suggested and he said bring it in, we'll have a look see.
I've got it tuned to 16m and I am a bit surprised it's not pulling more traffic. What is the international band?, I've forgotten. I've gotta think there are ships coming and going in the Penobscot, which is less than a mile from here.
