The 2009 Classic Moth Boat Nationals were held this past weekend in Elizabeth City, NC. Over 80% of the fleet consists of wood boats. The Elizabeth City local paper, Daily Advance, has a report here;

Daily Advance staff photographers took some great shots and assembled them into a slideshow here;

Thanks! But what is a Classic Moth? I always think of the Mk II scow hull and fully-battened rig when I think of Moths, and I've always loved these. Do Mk IIs qualify as Classic Moths? Rick

Essentially, the USA Classic Moth uses the International Moth rule as it was in effect before the International class merged with the Australians in 1969. Wikipedia does a good job of explaining the history at this link;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moth_(dinghy) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moth_%28dinghy%29)

Also some YouTube videos can be found at;

The Classic Moth Nationals are scored in three divisions; a Gen 2 division which is all out designs to the development rule, a Gen 1 division - older and slower designs, and a Vintage division which consists of restored hulls designed and built before 1950.

I have been fascinated with videos of the International Moths flying on their foils. There was someone at my local beach with one. During the time we were there (about 30 minutes) he was never able to get the boat sailing, much less up on the foils. Clearly a boat that requires a phenomenal amount of skill to sail.

Think Europe dinghy hull and I believe you have what is essentially a Classic Moth hull.

The Classic Moth and the International Foiler Moth may share the Moth name but they are like chalk and cheese.

As has been pointed out, the Classic Moth is a conventional singlehanded dinghy and the International Foiler Moth is, well, quite different from anything else on the water!

The Classic Moth has a very much senior tilt to the median age and the Internatonal foiler Moth is suited to very fit, young, professional sailors (though some of the Classic Moth sailors have built them and sail them quite well).
