Here's an International One Design that needs a new stem, you can see where she took a hit. It litteraly blew the stem free of the planks. The stem came out with no problems and I'll be able to use it as a good pattern. Except for the paint and the plugs that I removed, the third picture shows how it looked when it came into the shop. My question is........
The fir planking is in great shape, but how to deal with the ratty plank ends is a bit of a dilema.......any thoughts? http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid171/pa4706df9225d67b0a85765b2754258bf/f3ea4d2d.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid171/p228664d0f525154306330720ec9fb553/f3ea43f7.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid171/p02e4c16d4e178f82cedbbf1d57a100e2/f3ea4d1e.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid171/p776b26f91a8a4385531a469fa7079f05/f3ea4d33.jpg

Could you make the new stem thicker, move the rabbet back an 1 1/2" or so, and trim the planks behind the old fastener holes?

I've buttered up the ends with epoxy/wood flour. Maybe replace the worst.

Nice boat; nice shop.

Let me know if you need help.

WFK Say do you know the owner of Wind bird , Decatur Island boat ? I do , think he might be able to help . Let me know ,I can hook you up I'm sure . I think he'd have a , well sure he'd have a opinion ,,, that might help?? smile.gif I'd think you've already have studied it by now to have decided what's going to happen . The back ground of the pic's tell more than the words you post . I'd like to come help and learn , never to old for that . If it could be weekend work I'd like to try to fit it in . Eastsound , Oak Harbor not that far . PEG

Hi Paul......
I'm not familiar with the boat you speak of from Decatur.
I liked the idea of cutting back and enlarging the stem, but after getting that stem out and looking a little more closely, the port side is fine and on the starboard side there's only a couple that are quite torn up at the ends that will have to be dealt with. I think I'll replace with a laminated stem from fir.
There's a group of us that meet at my shop every Wednesday after work to mess around with various projects, drink a couple "adult beverages" and more or less talk boats. We've got a lot of irons in the fire for projects including a restoration of a 6 meter.....The original ballast is here on site, and full size patterns should be ready in a few weeks. You're more than welcome to come by for a closer look, just e-mail me and let me know your thoughts.
A word of caution........ Summer weekend ferries in the Sanjuans are a b@#$%

So after getting the old stem out, I made a pattern off of it and glued up a new one using 5 lifts of doug fir http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid185/p5f996a46a91a2cfacc92526f86589c8e/f279b14d.jpg All glued up [img]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid185/p4e57af59bb39b0810f41494d7a6ea6aa/f279b0b3.jpg I transferred the bevels http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid185/pe3cd800372333318a71c45cb0eee63a1/f279b34c.jpg And cut her out http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid185/p04c835ebab1e0b0a8e3a66559f703120/f279b2a2.jpg old and new http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid185/paf5e6ada8e5403c2a893d1a01b229e33/f279981e.jpg a coat of red lead http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid185/pefb778d1289de0289822b153aac6d483/f2799787.jpg and we have a fit http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid185/pa0746ceb27b00917673d48bafb69325f/f2799716.jpg

I liked LW's idea. Couldn't one say to that effect as to take the distance of just past the holes and split the difference by makig the plank rabbet half that distance further back and tilt the stem inward at the top to take up the other half? Looks like there's room in the lines for it to be unnoticeably tilted back so that the stem looks the original size, etc.

The planks ended up not being so bad, so I just made the new stem off the old one.
What started out as just a new stem will turn in to a complete restoration, replacing most of the frames, carlins, cabin and deck. Suprisingly there is very little rot,the planking is in great shape,........all full lenght, but the bronze fastenings are shot.
