The names of these pirates, the Doctor thought, were not dissimilar to those of pigeons; a panoply of blacks and shades of gray, colourful in adjectives rather than hues.
As to the pirates as agents of political transformation, he had made some notes upon the subject, which indicated that their primary purpose was taking things from ships and trading them for rum and intimate favours, in places ranging from Tortuga to Whitehall. Some did affect views on individual freedom, though these would have rattled the brains of a Paine or a Wollstonecraft, and the notion that they were a seething mass of nautical Robespierres would not stand the light. ...

Brig Le Requin, Tuesday, Cape St. Vincent bearing broad on the starboard Bow 25 miles
Sir,
I have the Honour to acquaint you with the Newes that we have took a fine Spanish Tartan on Passidge for Cadiz, rich Laden with Oil, Grains of Paradyse, Wine of Xeres, Sundryes & Cloth of Quality. We were in Hott Chace of her for half a day, but our long Bow Ordnance, admirably laid by Wm Church, Able, did cutt and loose her Stays, her canvas then did Fly Off and Come Down with Alackrity, reducing her Topp Hamper & shewing the fair Lines of her Bottom as she roll'd. Her speed reduced in consequence & her then fell off the Wind, we clos'd alongside and Grappled a-Breast of her, at which she did most fiercely Repulse our Advance, but we Lay'd Hold of her Quarters & our Jib Boom running full up her Spanker in a rush we Took her from a-stern at which she did quietly Submit to our full Possession, & so we hadd her Surrender.
We shall take her to Lisbon or O Porto, there to enjoy full the Rewardes of our Endeavours, as I fear we have been far too Long at Sea

Its a very long time since I spoke Somali in earnest, but that ought to be
"Peace be upon you! Give me the money - two million Dollars will do nicely. Thank you!"
