My boat is a cedar over steam bent white oak framed 20 ft Muskoka utility boat. Below the water line, the hull is made of 6" x 5/8" cedar planks with about a 1/2" overlap. Copper roves hold this boat together
I need to replace some parts of the keel, some garboards, and a few planks near the transom.
How do you remove part of a plank without disturbing the plank which overlaps the bad one, and how do you scarf a new plank onto an existing hull plank? I have Wooden Boat restoration, Danenbergs Runabout book, but I have not seen this topic covered. Could someone suggest a practical solution, or perhaps a book covering this topic?
I thank you all for your comments

Danenberg's second book (just published) covers lapstrake boats. So I assume he'd cover your topic.

You might want to come up to Peter Code's Traditional Boatbuilding shop in Mississauga some time. There's a restoration of a Crosby (?) lapstrake sailboat currently in progress. The keel and the garboards have been removed and will be replaced. They started with the keel, then removed the garboards. Each clench nail was drilled out and carefully pulled.

Monday and Wednesday nights are good, except that Peter's going to be going on holiday soon.

See Traditional BoatBuilding School (http://www.woodenboatbuilding.ca/)

PS Each plank was removed from stem to stern, and will be replaced with a completely new one.
