I'm working on the George Calkins Schooner "Tiama". The owner of the boat is Ed Fitzpatrick. Ed was one of the lead shipwright of the two Brigantine's bulit in San Pedro "Irving Johnson" and "Exy Johnson" He will be helping me with the 40' English Channel Cutters. Right now i'm helping him with the restoration of the Schooner "Tiama". If anybody out there has photo's of her sailing or any history. That would be awsome. Michael Hess. 949-872-6336, 808-372-5603 P.S. i will post some photo's soon.

Very interesting, thank you.
TIAMA was designed by William Garden, built by George Calkins (designer/builder of Calkins Bartender) in Newport, Oregon, and launched in 1965. I believe she is roughly 60' on deck with a beam of about 18'.....big!
George and his wife Wilma lived aboard her for 14 years cruising Alaska, California, Mexico, and Hawaii.
TIAMA is reportedly a Klamath Indian word meaning "strong desire".

Tiama was built by George C. at the E. M. Gerttula yard on the Siletz River at Kernville. My records have a note saying she was, "rebuilt into a 'luxury yacht' by Schooner Creek in 1989."

The Tiama was built at Gertula's Boatyard in Kernville, OR, about a mile up the Siletz River from Highway 101 and was launched, with difficulty, at 1 AM Friday, April 16, 1965 to the applause of about 40 people. I helped build the hull and was present on deck to ride her down the ways that night.

Michael....I would take a serious look at the copper "nicopress" furrel on the bobstay. The end has disappeared into the end of the furrel indicating that it was either not properly installed or the wire is receding. Also, copper fureels only hold rated wire strength on 7 X 19 wire, anything else like 7 X 7 or 1X 19 the turn of the wire is too slow to hold at rated wire strength.

If it is replaced by a similar arrangement, you will need two furrels, leave a 1/4 inch between the furrels for inspection of creep and 1/4 inch free at the end of the second for the same thing.
Doing so so....hurt like hell.....severe cramps from removing too much fluid yesterday.

Greetings, Mike. I am a friend of Ed's, though he would never admit to it. Great photos of her!!! I am forlorn here in AZ looking at her as I should be there pestering you men for tasks to do on her. Hoping to be there for launching and the scoot across channel and back to the barn. Anxious to hang the "kite" out and see what it looks like. I am really stoked she is getting the care and attention she has been waiting for. Ed has worked hard and been through hell to get to this point in time. Proof faith sure does wonders!!!! Thanks for posting, Michael, and keep us updated. Love this boat. I have a CT 41 ketch, another William Garden design, and I can see the similarities.
