Hi. I am new to using this site. Thought I would introduce myself by posting pics of my recently launched Whitefin 22 skiff. I have built several stripper canoes over the years, but this was my first
larger boatbuilding project.Am currently getting ready to start an Arch Davis Penobscot project.

This is a 22' moderate v planeing hull design. Construction is plywood over mahogany framing and fir stringers, fastened with epoxy and screws, sheathed outside with fiberglass. The brightwork trim is varnished mahogany. Design was 3/8 inch bottom and sides, but I added 1/4 inch additional layer to bottom. Weight without motor was 1400 pounds.I spent over 2 years of my sparse spare time building but muddled my way through it. I was attracted to this design because of the traditional looking lines but geared for a more modern day outboard propulsion.I was looking for a boat for cruising/exploring which was comfortable and could handle the sometimes rough conditions of big lakes, as well as get me home reasonably fast if I wanted.I liked the versatility of the option of open deck foreward for taking kids fishing or raising the canvas cuddy for camping. It is kept on a boatlift at my lake cabin in N. Minnesota where I have hundreds of miles of waterways and hundreds of islands to explore in the big lakes of Voyagers National Park on the Minnesota Ontario border. I am very pleased with the performance, cruising comfortably at hull speed and lower planing speeds with top speed of 35 mph with 4 aboard (90 hp outboard) I believe this is the only boat completed off this design to date, and the designer seems to have moved on to other things.

hnsbrc,

The usual Google search doesn't turn up a think about the boat or the designer. Can you please tell me more about the design and the designer. You said he/she is off to other things, but is there a contact, web page, etc.?

Thanks for the interest. Designer is John Gengler of J Gengler Boat Design. Address I have is Rt2 Box 209,Plainfield WS54966. No web site that I know of. Email is jgengler@uniontel.net. I saw the plans in a magazine one issue 3 years ago, but have not seen any plans from him since. I did email pics of the completed boat recently and he called back thanking me. The plans I recieved were full size patterns for frames, stem, and transom on mylar. The plans had options of a cruiser arrangement, center console arrangement, and a motor bracket arrangement. I found them to be quite accurate, the only problems I had were due to my own errors and inexperience. I believe John is working at starting a business(I think building pulling boats) but I am sure he could accomadate anyone interested in plans.

hsnbrc- Looks very nice! 22' is about the perfect length for our bigger waters here, don't ya think? Some years ago I had a 22' Aquasport (Fiberglass, I know...) center console, and it was perfect for Mille Lacs and other bigger lakes. I like the canvas, too. Not enough of those functional tops on skiffs nowadays.
