Lets see if I can catch up with you and make it a long distance duel launchin?? somethin for the forum to crow about!

So Im starting to head up around the bilge area and now in the am I am heading out to get some rope to tie her to the moulds from here on... thinkin of nailin the strips down as the trial run I did this arvo of the next strip the flamin thing headed outward somethin shocking so its hard down clampin we go!

First step cut and rout strips... done! Make some sawdust... done!

Second step scarf and glue extra 2ft to the strips... done!

Third step fit first strips to hull... done!

Fourth step fit next couple include sheoak feature strip... done

Fifth step fit more strips... done

Sixth step... get some seriass clamping pressure happenin yer galah!!

Yes at present Im using normal ol masking tape since Ive had buggar all working hours to get to the damned hardware to get some of that duct tape stuff... aahhhh well no worries its holding so thats the important thing!

Things Ive learnded...
1) The warnings about using Tuart in this strip planking caper... were right! This is the first and last time I use this stuff... talk about stripping out and tearing when routing mongrel stuff!
2) GET MORE CLAMPS!!!
3) These spring loaded clamps DO NOT have enough holding power to adequately bring the strips together tightly at the stem and stern
4) GET STILL MORE CLAMPS!!!
5) Get the duct tape BEFORE you begin!
6) FIND MORE CLAMPS!!!
7) Its nice slow work waiting for the glue to set up... trying to work out how many strips to do at one go is fun... sorta? talk about glue up the wazoooeee! ooh yes one gets the first strip down and rockin and rollin go to put the other on and hello!! stuck to the damned canoe! drink of coffee while waiting and hello stuck to the damned coffee cup! ah well... tis great patience builder HA!!
8) Did I mention... GET MORE CLAMPS!!!
9) Missus and hoons have no respek for a fella buildin a boat!! damned constant interupshuns! no respek I tells yer!
10) Im a messy glue worker!

Soooo reckon I can catch up mate?? yeah yeah much sanding and so forth to go but whose in a rush eh?... time taken to date October 2002 - March 2004 pretty snazzy or what!! HA!

Additional note since posting this in misc boat related... I have found...
Screws work a flamin treat to hold the strips in the right place! I can live with filling some screw holes no worries ;)

two questions, and i'll admit to ingnorance here... :D
1. i see you're stripping from the rail, down. on a regular canoe and i guess most other boats, it's from the keel, up. why the difference here?
2. sheoak? dang! how can i tell if the oak i use comes from a male tree or a female tree? why does it matter?
thanks!

Dear Wild Dingo

When you go clamp shopping pickup some medium sized PONY spring clamps, the ones with the orange tips and hand grips. I get mine at woodworker shows for $1.50 or so each. Rather than masking or duct tape try 3 to 4 foot sections of shock cord, 100 foot roll for around $35.00. As long as your shopping I'd buy a mop to cleanup that glue. Keep the pics coming.

ooooooops! Thanks Bruce I didnt realize Chad was doin another wee lassie {how many of these things are there? and whats the difference!}

MKA... Wee lassie 1... Wee Lassie 2 is on the cupboard waiting the building board is under the Weel Lassie 1... makes for a fine solid building board finish thisun toss it over and begin the next!

Pernicious Atavist...
1) Thats the method Mac McCarthy {Macs homepage (http://www.feathercanoes.com)} whose book the offsets came from promotes and seems to work well... eerrrr so far ;)
2) Aussie tree mate... sheoak flamingorgelishus or somethin like that :D dont make no difference male female mafale whatever just real purty hardwood and a beauty to behold and muck with

reinbilt... yep that shock chord is what Mac advises Im just a finiky buggar who reckons to save $$ at every oportunity... needless to say this didnt work this time and shock chord is going to be gotten... as for the flippin clamps! damned things have buggar all pressure so newys of them as well

Now on another matter those last few strips went way off the marker and blew well away from the moulds the damned Tuart is simply too damned hard to make the turn... so Im back down to one strip above the sheoak again and will now be smart and get some western red cedar or some such easily bent outta shape timber

ah well tis a joy either way... problems just make one think of solutions and man I just gotta stop tryin to reinvent the flamin wheel! :D

Thanks fellas

Good progress Shane.

Please explain: What wood are the strips, tuart or sheoak or both??

Someone told me to have a damp rag handy to wipe off the excess glue before it sets up. That was good advice. Much easier now than later.

BTW, Mac suggests the use of small brads through a short piece of wood if clamps don't pull the material down to the molds. This is a method that works if your wood does not tend to split.

Shane as Bruce mentions I'm doing a Hazen Micmac. I've got the outside glassed and I'm ready to take it off of the forms.

The question was asked about stripping from the shear down rather than the football up. The reason I did mine that way is I wanted to establish the shear line first instead of having to come back and cut it in.

mmm I read that to abe... but as I made my moulds using what was to hand ergo chipboard nails and brads just dont hang on... mmm for that matter the blasted screws wouldnt in the end either! :mad: aahhh well Ive taken a bunch of strips of again now and will start again. {one up toward keel from feature strip}

The intent was to build the hull from the Tuart and the feature strip and most of the other timbers in the pink reds of the Sheoak for contrast with a small amount of the deeper rich red of Jarrah thrown in the mix for good measure... but am presently revising those thoughts.

Yes I thought yous fellas would note the wonderous glue lines ;) Im sorta doing this between the many calls from SWMBO to do the many honey do's around here and the hoons constant demands and expectations... sorta grab a quick minute and whack another strip on generally speaking just as Im about to grab the rag and give it a swipe someone yells "DAD!!" ... theres much to be said for the boatshop being AWAY from the damned house

aahh the elusive Chad ;) How goes it mate... so the comp is a non event eh? you got me well and truely beat my friend... no worries time is our friend so eventually she will be done and we will see how they go eh?

doing it from the sheer up was simply the way I found most promote Mac and Gil Gilpatrick for just two actually dont know about the others as these are the two I found that grabbed my attention the most... and that fella from Guillimot kayaks but thats kayaks not canoes eh? :D
