No hard and fast definitions for "wherry". Might also be considered to be a "whitehall" even though the bow isn't plumb. The offset sculling notch might provide the best element to ID...

Here's a Whitehall Spirit Solo 14 -

If it's a commercial boat built after Nov. 1, 1972, there should be a Hull ID number on the transom ... starboard side, within 2 inches of the top, I think. It's possible that it was simply scratched into the glass ... small builders often do that. If you can find an ID number, you can easily figure out who built it when, and what the model was called.

And if you figure out the manufacturer and the year was 1990 or earlier, get in touch with someone who has back issues of Small Boat Journal. You might find ads (or even an article) with more information.

CG suggestions say that two tags should be made...one on the transom and another in a tucked out of the way place...try looking inside that foredeck if you have access.

Rob, it sure looks like an EDDON Gig made in Gig harbor, Wa. in the 1960's - 1970's.

Both boats have a bronze plate on the stem and should have a hull # engraved on the transom.

Explanation of codes: http://boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm
Coast Guard database of manufacturers: www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_database.htm

XHM 00248 1180 decodes as follows:

XHM = manufacturer's ID code, in this case Ohima Plastics of Yelm, WA (out of business since 1992)
00248 = manufacturer's serial number, likely hull no. 248
1180 = made in Nov. 1980

But Klondike is right ... sure looks like the photos of an Eddon Gig.

i agree, the two are identical. so maybe the gig was made by ohima plastics? i guess i'm ignorant of the difference between a gig, a wherry and a whitehall.:o bob g.

The hulls for the EDDON Gigs were made by a company in Yelm then
finished in Gig Harbor. If you need some help with the rig let me know
as I have one.

Sail measures 90" x 140". It is sleeved to fit over the mast. I found this to be workable as it was possible to reef it by rolling on the mast.
Never worked once I was on the water. As a kid, We just dumped it a lot, slid in and bailed her out. I learned to tie the bucket in by losing it once.
The mast is 14".
I hope that you can get an idea of the daggerboard size from my hasty picture.
The weakest part is the rudder. It does need the leverage to get her to come about but it has always needed a kickup rudder as we used the boat off a beach.
While it is a tender boat in a breeze, our large family enjoyed learning how to sail with the little gig.
