Hi Guys, we have the most beautiful Huon Pine 28' S&S built in 1955 you are likely to see. Maybe i am one eyed. Anyway she has a modern style dagger keel with trailing deadwood. The keel is cast iron and is in great condition except for some pitting as you would expect. I have just stripped the keel of paint and scale with a wire brush and have just painted on 2 coats of Penatrol. It works well and seems to stop the scale. I was just thinking i would like to fair the furface and was hoping someone might be able to give me some ideas as to what the best material for the job would be. Maybe i need to remove the Penatrol. I would appreciat your thoughts.

Beaumont's Egg.
I have waited quite some time for a question which needed that answer.

Go to the Interlux site and search out their finish systems for steel hulls. Buy a complete system which will probably consist of 3 products not including fairing compound. Apply all pre-coats/primers per the directions. Apply their compatible fairing compound followed by the recommended final coats-bottom paint.
I'm not 100% certain but I don't believe Penetrol is compatible with modern finishes for steel. Penetrol might force you to go lo-tech, using older materials (red lead?).

I haven't made a whole lot of progress recently but do have a few newer pictures to upload.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled program, "Finishing an Iron Keel." :)

There is a product that will stop rust and pitting from occuring on a cast iron keel,
"Devcon Z" The product is 98% pure Zinc and can be covered over with epoxy and epoxy based fillers.
