I managed to snag a trip to Vancouver during their WBS and got to spend a beautiful day on Granville Island gawking at wooden boats. Can't think of a better way to spend a layover, that and a run around Stanley Park. After visiting Mystic and the WBS there, this one is very small but had a few treasures.

Almost no static, onshore displays or vendors. One gentleman had strip planked canoes and kayaks and even a nutshell pram:

There was a lovely W. Atkins 32' schooner, AJA. The dock configuration did not allow for great photos, and AJA was guarded by a watch dog to ensure no one got too close!

And now my favorite. I actually have a folder saved on my computer for all things "Eel". It is one of those designs that I would love to build some day and who knows if I ever will. And here was Pilgrim's Wake, an Eel, and a Holmes' Eel at that! I spent quite a bit of time talking to builder. He strip built her over many years, wouldn't fess up to how many, and on both sides of Canada. Did some marvelous engineering on her. Though he did raise the cabin some to accommodate his height.

Something you don't see everyday, a trim tab on her rudder.

I spent a few hours down there as well yesterday. (I was the guy with the gut.)
I like that "Jolitee" boat. It was designed by Robert Harris who designed the Vancouver 27, JD's old boat. Robert Harris was down there too.
Your right about it being a bad place to take pictures.
Did you go on the "Master" that boat fascinates me.

Gotta admit I was disappointed. Saw it on the WB Calendar months ago and had been looking forward to it. I should have had an inkling that it wasn't a major event when on prior trips to Vancouver no one knew about it. But hey, a day spent near the water looking at wooden boats is well spent. And I'm not sure there even is another Holmes' Eel to bump into, at least on this side of the pond.
Didn't get on the Master or any others, just gawked and talked from the docks.

Its still on. Aug.29 & 30. Free Admission. Just get to Granville Island, if you find parking within a 9 mile radius your doing well. Yes, its a small show but a woodies a woody.
I managed a good fish(cod) & chips & an apple juice for $11. Sorry that the Quarter Deck closed. It was a bookshop, they retired, all nautical books.
I may go again, I wanted to buttonhole the guy with the eel but it seemed that someone else had a lot to say to him. So I moved on. Was that you SB? If so, thanks for coming.

I've been to this show. It's small, but there's some quality to it. Also, a visit to Vancouver BC is always cool.

>> Do you have any more pictures of the bridgedecks?<<
Sorry, that's all I took. Went looking for more small sailboats and never found any.

It seems an odd use of time to strip plank a Nutshell since it's designed for plywood. Would others do it? I also saw a thread about someone considering strip planking a dory. (?)
(Maybe my problem is that I don't find strip planking attractive....)

The fact that he said he's been working on it for years shows it's possible to make a simple project very difficult. But who ever said wooden boats had to be practical?
Going to the Quarterdeck was my fall back position, and that was gone. Maybe visit the little museum shops since I'm here...nope, they've disappeared also! At least the brew pub was open. After a couple of IPA's I went back and talked to Eel guy, but for some reason my ears were still blocked from flying so I simply retreated to the hotel to regroup for today's run. All in all it still was a good day.

I'm going to a meeting in Vancouver, Oct. 14-17. I won't have much spare time, but I wonder if anyone has some "don't miss" recommendations to offer. Thanks.
