Sunday I'm going to take a look at this boat:

I'm at the early stages of research and mostly wanting to pick the broker's brains a bit, but also I am highly intrigued by this boat. Its price seems quite reasonable considering the good condition it appears to be in. The broker seemed genuinely impressed with how particular the owners have been with it - they have hauled and painted it every year with ablative paint and the hull supposedly is in excellent condition and it has two relatively new engines.

The main thing I'm trying to get a handle on is ballpark estimates of annual ownership costs. I figure the main recurring costs of ownership, barring unforseen catastrophes like a blown engine or something, are:

- Insurance
- Slip fees
- Fuel
- Accessories and outfitting (PFDs and other accoutrement, etc.)
- Supplies and other miscellany
- Annual haul-out and paint (or biennial)
- Engine service (oil changes, maintenance, checkups)

It's not so much the initial cost of acquisition that concerns me as it is the ongoing annual cost of just owning the damn thing. Are we talking $500 per month or $2,000 per month? $2,000 per year or $10,000 per year? That really will determine what kind and size of boat I eventually get, probably more than the purchase price.

Unlike a lot of newbie, would-be boat buyers I'm not all hyped up and in love with any particular boat. There are a lot of gorgeous old wooden boats out there and someday I hope to have one, whether it's this one or another one. But I'm trying to buy with my head, not my heart. I did that with a Porsche once, and although it was fun to drive (when it wasn't in the shop), it practically ate me out of house and home. Once bitten, twice shy.

And yes, I will most definitely get a survey of any boat before I put any money on it.

What other tips or info can you experienced old boat owners offer along these lines?

Much obliged.
