Does anyone know what happened to the original Alden schooner Heron? She was 54', gaff-rigged on both masts. She was on Lake Ontario in the '50's, belonging to the Greb (of Hush Puppy fame) family. We have found reference to her later in the Caribbean, and then nothing. Our 87-year-old sailing buddy remembers her well and would like to learn her fate.

There is a schooner named Heron restored by Robert Pulsch.

I could be wrong but I don't think this one's what you are looking for. She's a Crowninshield and the history suggests that she was mostly on the East Coast.

The Crowninshield is an absolutely beautifull boat. I have had the chance to race against her at Gloucester... was this boat in a maritime accident in the past couple of yrs?
yes here it is, has she been repaired?

Yup the Alden Heron was wrecked and sunk. Subsequently raised with much additional damage. To my knowledge she's available for sale in her wrecked and un-restored condition. Beautiful Boat - very sad.

This Heron was salvaged by the guy who I bought my Concordia from. I doubt it has been restored at this point. I do have pictures of her after she was recovered if anyone is interested. You can PM me and I'll forward the e-mail over.

Thanks for the responses so far. We are aware of the sunken schooner but she was not the Alden we are looking for. In the WB articles, there are several references to the new Heron having been altered from the original plan and rigging, and we are puzzled by the fact that the name remained. She was being chartered in the Caribbean in the 60's We are still searching..........

Wow - that's great news. Just to double check - you are talking about the Alden schooner, not the Crowinshield, yes?

If you're still looking... I crewed aboard the salvaged Heron, rechristened Atlantis during Operation Sail in 1976. We were part of the parade in New York Harbor and traveled up the coast with a long rest in Newport. You might spot her if you Google the Bicentennial parade images. Other lovely Alden Schooners there (Charm III, Tiki). The two navy guys who salvaged her used her for charters along the Eastern Seaboard. They were low on funds and she had no electronics. Captain, John Cassanova used a sextant, and it was hairy in the fog, but he was very knowledgeable. I steered by the stars on night watch and it was the greatest thrill of my young life. Obviously an Alden, it was extremely elegant below decks with fireplace in the Salon and crystal lamps on gimbals. Early on I noticed some alarming damage amidships on the starboard side. The owners told me they had salvaged the famous Heron, and we often raced other yachts for food, drink and berth fees. We spent time at City Island for some repairs after riding out a hurricane in the lee of Block Island. They continued dow the the Coast to Antigua where I lost touch with them. Hope this helps trigger a more recent chapter in someone's memory.
