My regular sawyer does not forsee anytime soon, being able to supply me with a white oak plank large enough for my current project. So I am hoping to locate someone within a few hours drive (or who might ship to a business near me so I can leverage cheaper shipping costs) who can help (Yellow pages and two months of "asking around" all of the local businesses has produced an endless number of additional dead ends.). It is both a problem of capacity (most Saw Mizers without extended beds can only go 16 feet) and availability of good, quartersawn oak at this length (I can't use plain sawn so my six inch wide plank plus half of the unused heart box is going to require quite a tree). I have scrapped three keels now which were plain sawn and the grain in this orientation will check to no end and tear up the plank as you all know, regardless what preventative measures one uses. I need a keel who's rough dimensions before I plane it, should be 2 in. x 6 in. x 17 feet.
So I have taken to offering rewards now. To the tip that eventually leads to a successful business contact within driving distance or who's freight is fairly reasonable, I'd like to extend my gratitude with a complete set of Arno Day's lofting series videos. I have no further use of them and someone else might as well get the benefit of Arno's wisdome.

It would be helpful to know where you are.

As above, I don't know where you are, but...

Try:

Blue Ridge Lumber
183 Mule Academy Rd
Fishersville, VA
(540) 885-5055

They have routinely sawn 8' x 10" x 24' white oak timbers for me for timber framing, and this past spring produced some beautiful 8" x 10" x 32' timbers for the lower chords in 4 timber trusses.

Good Luck

I got the White Oak for MattJ's "RARUS" from them, and it all looked good to me. (Of course that was a few years ago, and Matt refuses to post pictures of what he's done with them since....;) )

If you are near the Northwest U.S., try Blackstock lumber in Seattle or Edensaw in Port Townsend.

Sawyers frequently saw lumber longer than the length of their bed. There are lots of people with such lumber in stock. Certainly, others who have access to trees large enough.

I guess the questions is: What do you want to pay for the wood? (17bdft is less than $35 many places.)

There's a mill in West Bath Me. called Higmo's, their sign reads "we cut everything except your hair" :D . I beleive they cut oak for Dick Pulsifer, builder of the Pulsifer Hamptons.

I can't vouch for them, but I've passed by their store a few times and they seem to be in your neck of the woods. ;)
