This is one of the central tenants of modern psychology. From Freud to Jung to Maslow and beyond it's central, and rightly so.

What it means is both simple and complex. On a simple level you see on another what belongs to you. It can be strength, it can be weakness, but you see it and react to an image, not the person.

The heavier lifting is that you are a maker of it. You are a great writer, a great actor, a fantastic person of any stripe. Actually living it is a piece of work.

Anyway, be mindful of the phenomenon. You can't help be involved, but you can be kind.

Translation. It's not easy if you haven't seen it, but once you've seen it it is revelatory. I think the first time I saw it was with my ex-wife. I'm not quite sure what story I was carrying about her, but one day, one moment, it dropped away and there she was as she really was. Flawed, vibrant, a silly beautiful woman. I can't explain it, but I know it's real.
