Mary and I just got back from our first cruise on our 24' Ostkust Sloop. We were gone for a week and had a fantastic time.

Day 1

Packing and prepping and buying a few last minute things meant a later than planned departure. Our 9 am ETD ended up being an 11 am departure. Here we are loading some stuff on the boat. We had already brought a load out the night before in the dinghy.

The wind was light and right on the nose so we motored out of Casco Bay between Cow Island and Great Diamond and into Hussey Sound. We passed Jewell Island and were out in open ocean and heading downeast for Seguin Island 20 miles away. We were in the midst of a heatwave in Southern Maine so winds were light but we sailed along at about 3 knots. By 4 pm the wind had let up and we knew we'd have to motor to make it there by dark. So we fired up the trusty Vire 12 and motor sailed the last couple of hours arriving at 6 pm. We were met by Vinny and Shawn who had sailed down from their mooring in Boothbay Harbor to meet us. They had saved a mooring for us and invited us to dinner! Just what a couple of hot and tired sailors needed. Thanks Vinny and Shawn.

After a wonderful dinner we moved all our stuff out into the cockpit to clear off our bunks and had a great night's sleep. Our long planned cruise had gotten off to a wonderful start.

To be continued...

Day 2

The plan for Monday was to try and meet up with the rest of the Welfare Fleet. The other four boats were in South Bristol so we talked on the phone and thought we could all make Round Pond in one day. We left Seguin after a walk around the lighthouse and a freshwater rinse from a hose by the tramway track. The tramway was used to get coal and oil and other supplies up to the lighthouse. The light is 180 feet above the water, a first order Fresnel lens.

Following Vinny and Shawn on Acacia:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3422.jpg

They took us through this little cut between Fisherman Island and Ram Island:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3425.jpg

As we passed Thrumcap Island and were crossing the mouth of Johns Bay I called Chris again and found that the rest of the fleet were about to round Pemaquid point. We thought if we started up our motors we could catch up to them. Sure enough, a little later we could see them:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3429.jpg

As we got closer we could make out Dan in his Lightning, Sophia, Chris in his catboat, Victoria and Howard in his Chebacco, Lily Catchpole.

It was a light air run downwind to Round Pond from Pemaquid point and Chris and Howard really pulled away from the rest of us:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_0925.jpg

Round Pond is a very crowded harbor with a couple of restaurants and a boatshop. Here is the fleet at anchor:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/08-17-09_1737.jpg

We all had a swim in the surprisingly warm water and a friend who lives nearby gave me a ride to town to pick up some ice and beer. Then he joined us onboard for an awesome dinner of meatloaf and baked potatoes that we cooked on our new Cobb Cooker. Thanks, Ingo, for the tip about the Cobb. Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of the cooker in action.

Day 3

In the morning we had a skipper's meeting on Acacia and decided to take a short sail to Hog Island and stop there for lunch.

That anchorage at Seguin rivals Monhegan for roughness; you seem to have lucked out and arrived on what might have been the only calm night of the year. Seguin is one place I always enjoy passing.

Day 3 continued

We had a nice sail around Muscongus Sound as we waited for the fleet to gather then a nice run up to Hog Island. There is a very narrow channel at the north end of the Island and the current was coming on strong so we gave Dan a tow as he was the only member of the fleet without a motor:

Hog Island has a National Audubon Society facility on it that was founded in 1936. From the NAS's webpages:

"Since 1936, residential sessions at Hog Island Audubon Camp have been led by some of the most respected naturalists and environmental educators in the nation, in turn inspiring scores of scientists, school and university educators, and conservation leaders.

Roger Tory Peterson, inventor of the modern field guide, was among the first teachers at the camp in the 1940s, where his experiences helped him ignite popular bird watching in the United States.

Rachel Carson, a great force behind the modern environmental movement, visited Hog Island in 1960 and mentioned it in her landmark book Silent Spring.

Dr. Stephen W. Kress, a Hog Island Audubon Camp director in the 1970s, began there to develop Project Puffin, the seabird restoration program recognized nationally and internationally today for reintroducing terns and Atlantic puffins to midcoast Maine islands.

Kenn Kaufman, international birding authority, author, and educator, was only nine years old when he read Peterson’s account of time spent at Hog Island. Now Kaufman teaches a session or two there every year.
And so many more have experienced and shared the island’s magic."

http://www.maineaudubon.org/explore/camp/hi_overview.shtml

Unfortunately due to funding issues they aren't running any programs at Hog Island this summer so the whole place was deserted. But it is still open to the public for exploration and while we planned a lunch stop only we decided to stick around and spend the night in their anchorage. Here are a few pics:

One benefit to sailing on the Maine coast in the high season is sharing the water with some really beautiful boats. This one happened by while we were on Hog:

A side bar:

Right across from Hog Island is Keene Neck. A book of photographs chronicles the life of the Carter and Harvey families that live there, having staked their claim to the land after being dispossessed of their homesteads on Swan's Island and Vinalhaven further Downeast. http://library.duke.edu/exhibits/olivepierce/photos/Maine/index.html

A youtube of Fern Carter's last days in life (he was the clan patriarch) can be seen here: http://library.duke.edu/exhibits/olivepierce/

The Rozinante belongs to friends who live in Greenland Cove around the point from Hog, Dick and Grace Rowland. He lost his arm at age 26 when he was run over by a cabin cruiser while sailing his Sunfish on Lake Michigan.

JimConlin

Dave- Is there a side-side-bar about any clever adaptations to make the Rozinante easy to sail?

rbgarr
08-24-2009, 10:46 PM
Briefly, he does not do anything different for the most part regarding his missing arm. His wife fell overboard once and he hauled her back aboard unaided (and you can imagine how difficult that would be).

He also flies his own plane and is an excellent woodworker. He taught me how to use a wood lathe. I made them a half-model of the boat.

Back to Steven and Mary's thread. Did you get any photos of the part of your trip from here to Portland... or was it too much with all the rest you had to deal with?

Day 4

Started out with this view out of the cabin:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/08-19-09_0602.jpg

It was decided to head back to South Bristol, though Dan would head up to Friendship and work his way back to Brooksville and Lance would start heading back towards Kittery.
The day stared out fine with a downwind run out of Muscongus Bay toward Pemaquid Point. This was a big surprise as the wind had been from the South all week. But we weren't complaining.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3475.jpg

When we got out of the Bay some big ocean swells were running and we got into an area where the North breeze that had been bringing us down the bay met up with the south wind from the open ocean and we were just floundering around out there for a little while. This is when Vinny and Shawn found that their engine was over heating. Vinny changed the impeller but that didn't solve the problem. Then the sea breeze filled in from the Southwest and we were all able to kill our motors and start tacking up to Pemaquid point. Howard wasn't afraid of any old rocks:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3484.jpg

Lily Catchpole had no trouble passing Victoria upwind:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3486.jpg

This is where the deeper keeled Talisman came into her own and started gaining on Victoria. Talisman was driving through the waves that were slowing down Victoria and Lily Catchpole. They had a big lead as we had hung around with Acacia for a while but we started to catch up. Chris was playing in the breeze against the cliffs but we were too chicken to go that close:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3489.jpg

Here's a better view:

StevenBauer

We finally passed Victoria after some close crossing tacks then Chris called on the radio and mentioned that we might smell some diesel as he tacked up past us again. :)

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3495.jpg

The whole time we were tacking up to round Pemaquid Point the wind was building nicely. After rounding the point it turned into a screaming downwind run. We were fine but Chris might have had a little too much sail on. He had to stand on the wheel to hold his course. Howard had hove-to to take pics and he caught us over hauling Victoria. With the stronger winds we weren't trailing behind any more.

At the head of the Bay we turned in to the Gut. Chris scraped bottom a couple of times looking for a mooring for us but he was able to jump out and lift her off with only his pride injured a little.

We got a mooring right by this beautiful little wooden tug:

Day 5

Vinny and Shawn had gone straight to Boothbay Harbor to have a look at their engine trouble and Chris was staying put so it was just Lily Catchpole and Talisman heading to Boothbay Harbor. It was a gorgeous day, we motored through the swing bridge and raised sail to head out the Damariscotta and around Ocean Point to Boothbay.

So Steven... rumor has it that Mary wants a bigger boat now. :D

Remember the powerboat from Kennebunk moored just off your bow at our house? They hit that same stretch of wind and waves you did between Seguin and Small Point. It was no fun for them either.

Wonderful pictures everyone!!(Steven, your pictures need more captions!) A lovely cruise in really beautiful scenery with grand weather to boot! It's almost enough to get me to thinking that perhaps one summer I'd like to bring my boat down to join the cruise and act as a sort of mother ship for carrying the little "extras",you know, beer, ice, water, more beer etc...it would be a treat!!

Cheers!

Day 6

This was the exciting day. It started out slow. We woke on Dave's mooring to fog. Thick fog.

Talisman, with Dave's Shields on the left:
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3534.jpg?t=1251512165

Lily Catchpole, furthest away:
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3536.jpg?t=1251512223

We hung out at Dave's hoping the fog would burn off. Howard joined us and we waited. We were hoping to make it back to Portland but were not really excited about sailing in the fog. By 10:30 Howard decided he would head back to So. Bristol and his trailer fog or no. He also told us he had a spare radar reflector we could use. That was the one item that I had meant to buy but never did. So we figured we would follow him out of Boothbay Harbor and see how it went. By now the fog was even thicker, we couldn't even see Talisman on the mooring. But we have two handheld GPS units and we'd just go slowly.

Getting underway:

Following Howard out of the Harbor:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3541.jpg?t=1251512483

Once out in open water there was a nice breeze even though visibility was still just a couple of hundred feet so we started sailing. After a while the fog even started lift a little. We knew that Seguin Island was off to starboard somewhere but it was a relief to actually see it:

By the time we were leaving Seguin behind the fog was really starting to clear:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3544.jpg?t=1251512791

The rest of the afternoon was the most amazing sailing I've ever experienced. The wind kept building and the seas kept building but we were flying along under full sail just going faster and faster on a close reach out in the open ocean with not a soul in sight. The only bummer about the afternoon was that Mary was terribly seasick. She's only been seasick once, years ago, on a ferry in Long Island Sound. But she was not having the awesome time I was.
By 5 pm we were just up to Halfway rock and cooking along with GPS readings around 6.5 sometimes hitting 7 knots when the seas really started to get big. Not too scary at first but building. We had been hearing about some thunderstorms on the radio further inland but now it seemed a front was getting closer to the coast. By 5:30 we had dropped the main after getting soaked by some waves breaking on the side of the boat but we were still making 4.5 knots under the jib alone. By 6pm we decided to give up on the idea of making it back to Portland and turned North to make a run for safe harbor in Harpswell. We dropped the jib now and were motoring in. We didn't know it at the time but the big swells were from Hurricane Bill churning it's deadly way up the coast. Talisman was behaving beautifully but Mary was having a rough time. The clouds off to the West were really not looking good and some really strong gusts were coming from the West now. I was loving it until as we were surfing down a big wave the dinghy we were towing behind us passed us to starboard. Then a gust of wind would catch it and it would lift from the water like a kite on it's painter with just one rear corner of the dinghy still touching water. Then the wave would pass under us and she would settle back down behind us until the next wave would do it all over again. So I was a little worried about losing the dinghy and also worried about this just ahead:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20cruise/IMG_3546.jpg?t=1251514709

We could see the Monument on one side of the bay and the two concrete spotting towers on the other so we had a clear escape route. It was pretty tense for the next half hour or so but the seas calmed down as soon as we entered Harpswell Sound and we were anchored at Harpswell Harbor just as night fell.
I made Mary some soup and she went right to sleep. I had a nice big rum with some OJ and tried to get my phone to work. It had been in my pocket when some big waves had drenched us earlier. I wanted to call Vinny and Shawn and Dave and Chris and Howard as they all knew we were out there but the keys on my phone wouldn't work. I lifted the engine cover and felt that the motor was hot but not too hot so I set the phone down in the warm motor and had another rum and OJ. A half hour later I tried it and the keys all worked pefectly. The signal wasn't great but I was able to talk to everyone and let them know we were OK. Then I could relax and get some sleep, it had been a long day.

Great pictures!

a half serious question:

Do you folks on the "other" coast see any wind at all?:D:D:p

Aside from the last few heatwave days, a 15-20 knot breeze is as regular as the sun rising around here.

We usually have a fantastic sailing breeze in the afternoon along the coast here in the 15 -20 knot range. The week we were away was unusual, it was during a rare heat wave - something that only happens every few years. Last summer Portland never even reached 90 degrees.

One thing I didn't mention in last night's write up of day 6 was the lightning. Right around when I took that picture of the front moving up the coast there was lightning flashing all around us. That sure reinforced the decision to head for cover instead of trying to make it home to Portland.

a half serious question:

Yes Banjoman we do see plenty of wind in fact the day Shawn and I left the group with engine problems we were out in 25 and 30 knot steady,There are times when it blows 30 and gusts to 45. We have our share of fun. As Steven said, the two weeks we took for this cruise were real summer heat days, light wind and hazy, but no rain for awhile!

Day 7

The last day of the cruise. We woke to fog again but wanted to get home so after a big breakfast we headed out Harpswell sound under power. It wasn't too bad at first but got thicker after a while.

We saw the monument for a few minutes then lost it in the fog. As we got closer we could see it again. There were some big waves breaking on the islands around here but we'd soon be in protected waters again.

By the time we wound our way through Broad Sound and the islands and ledges leading to the North end of Chebeague Island the fog lifted and the wind picked up again. We raised sail and had a glorious reach the last 9 miles the length of Casco Bay back to the mooring.

What no Mainer accents!!

I think we've all lost those due to TV , everyone sounds more alike these days.

How's Mary feeling , glad to be back on land?

Do you think she'll go on another "long" cruise after being that sea sick?

We're actually "from away", Paul. I grew up on Long Island before moving to NJ and Mary is a regular Jersey Girl. :D We've only been in Maine for 20 years, practically newbies. :)

No Jersey accents either that I could hear, but your right you'll never be "one of us" New Englanders that is :D

Steven, thanks for this thread. Looks to have been a perfect week. The coast of Maine looks so much like up here in Novi only a bit more crowded. Great sailing.:)
